Arroyo Grande is a town in Imperial County, California, United States. The population was 1,623 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of Arroyo Grande River and is part of the larger community of Arroyo Grande. The first mention of Arroyo Grande can be traced to 1848 when Antonio Paloura advertised "a place for sale" on his Rancho Real de las Flores near present-day downtown Arroyo Grande. The original settlers were Spanish Franciscans who arrived in 1847 from San Francisco. In 1859, Captain John Crouse and his party discovered gold near present-day Paso Robles and decided to make their home there. In 1861, they built the first school in what is now Arroyo Grande which soon became an important center for ranching operations due to its location across the river from Mexico City and El Tovar mine (now known as Adobe Valley). In 1872 Captain Hennepin found oil shale near Nacimientos Creek within sight of where modern day Arroyo Grande stands today; this led to increased oilsands production by companies such as Shell and Encana over ensuing years. As industry boomed around the turn of the century, more people began moving into town including many farmers who had bought land along the riverbanks because it offeredaccess to irrigation water systems that became increasingly important during this time period. In 1907, voters approved a school bond issue that helped fund construction of a new high school which opened in 1909. A year later, On July 20th 1907 an Earthquake struck central California damaging or damaging most buildings within a radius of about 25 miles; however no damage occurred at Arroyo Grande although some residents did suffer some physical Damage including broken windows and doors due to shaking caused by temblors alone or combined with wind forces).
