The firearms industry in Arroyo Grande, California began with the importation of arms from Europe in the 1800s. The first firearms manufactured in this town were pistols and rifles by United States Arms Company. This company was founded by George Hargrave and Samuel Colt in 1845. In 1903, the government of California passed a law regulating handguns and it required that all handguns must be registered with the state. This law also made it illegal to make or sell anyunsilenced handgun without a license from the state police. In 1934, Arroyo Grande became an incorporated city and its gun control laws changed again as part of this process. From 1934 until 1978, Arroyo Grande had no gun regulation laws at all; this means that weapons could be bought, sold or possessed without any restrictions whatsoever! In 1978, Proposition 218 was passed which created stricter gun regulation laws within the city limits of Arroyo Grande. Proposition 218 criminalized possession of any unregistered handgun and made it a felony to possess a semiautomatic rifle with ten rounds or less magazine capacity. Additionally, pistol ownership rules were increased significantly as well- now anyone over 21 years old must have a valid license to own a Pistol (or equivalent) while owning any other firearm(s). Since 1979, there has been an annual Gun Control Symposium hosted by City Hall in order to update local ordinance on new technology related to handguns and other firearms

Arroyo Grande was a small town in California, located on the banks of the Sacramento River. The community was founded by Spanish settlers in 1795, and became an important transportation and commercial center during the 18th century. It declined during the 19th century, however, due to its proximity to more populous settlements. Arroyo Grande regained some prominence during World War II as a military base and civilian airport. The community then declined again after the war ended. In recent decades, Arroyo Grande has become a center for agriculture and natural resources development.
The first Europeans to visit what is now Arroyo Grande, California were the Spanish in 1821. The area was part of Rancho San Miguel de Atascadero, and the first permanent resident was José Gomez who arrived in 1825. rancho arroyo grande was surveyed in 1839 by Captain George Bancroft and named after the largest stream flowing through that region- Arroyo Grande. In 1862, Juan Bautista Durán founded a ranch here called Rancho Los Nietos which extended into present day Sonoma County. In 1886, Koster & Associates developed this land into what is now known as Gateway City. A water pipeline was built from El Sobrante to Turlock in 1923 which made it easier for farmers to get their goods to market. The city of Arroyo Grande began forming in 1925 when two small villages merged: Pacheco and Floresville. The first mayor of Arroyo Grande was John Smeaton who served from 1927 until his death in 1938. A post office called Arroyo Grande opened on November 3, 1870, and remained open until it closed on October 15, 1907. On May 10th 1906 an oil well at Butte Wells caused a natural gas explosion that destroyed much of the town center including most of the businesses
