Arroyo Grande is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. The name is Spanish for "Rio Grande," meaning "the great river." Arroyo Grande is located on the banks of the San Joaquin River. The community began as a small ranching settlement in 1887 by Mexican settlers who had followed the irrigation waters from Yreka to water their plants near present-day Arroyo Grande. By 1905, there were 5 businesses and 100 residents. In 1912, an electric power company built a substation and two blocks of homes were built. A post office was established in 1913, and business growth increased until World War II when the war disrupted agriculture and transportation production; however, after that time business activity has fluctuated with population growth rates below 1%. In 1946, Arroyo Grande became one of the first towns in Kern County to be incorporated under state law when it received a vote of incorporation from its citizens who assembled at City Hall on October 21st. The first mayor was Jock Mahoney (1946-1950). Businesses which have operated here through most of its history are: grocery store(s), hardware store(s), bank(s), dry goods store/ notions store(s), automotive parts store/shop(s), bakery/ cupcake shop/ doughnut shop/, post office (closed 1993) and housing developments such as Valley View Estates which opened in 1958-1959 along with other subdivisions including Park Meadows subdivision (opened 1959) and Vista del Carmen subdivision (opened 1966). A new high school opens in fall 2017 as part of a larger school system renovation project called Rancho Valencia HS which includes upgrading athletic facilities as well as new classrooms for grades 9 through 12

In 1847, the California Gold Rush began and quickly resulted in a population explosion of about 25,000 people over the next year. By 1850, there were more than 100,000 people living in the area. The town of Arroyo Grande was founded on December 6th, 1851 by James Irvine and his brother David Irvine. The towns name comes from the Arroyo Grande River which flows through it. In 1862, General Don Carlos Manuel de Santa Anna made an attack against Arroyo Grande and its residents fought back fiercely resulting in many fatalities on both sides. On November 3rd of that year, Governor Pio Pico approved the incorporation of Arroyo Grande into Los Angeles County.
