Arroyo Grande, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1851 by Captain José Arroyo and his wife, María del Carmen Castro. The name of the town comes from a Rancho Arroyo Grande which was granted to them in 1847. The first post office in the town was called Pinosville and opened on November 12th, 1860. In 1872, Arroyo Grande had its first school when Mrs. Linares donated land for a school district. The first public library opened in 1902 and it still operates today as the Arroyo Grande Library System. In 1912, Arroyo Grande became part of the Atascosa County Agricultural District and remained that way until 1959 when it became Kern County's sole agricultural district again. AfterBecoming an agricultural district once again however, it changed its name toArroyo Grande Vineyards & Winery on October 17th of that year due to then-Governor Earl Warren's proclamation designating wines made within its boundaries as "Arroyogrande." Since 1978 when wine production withinits boundaries ceased due to Prohibition regulations, much of what is now known aboutArroyogrande Vineyards & Winery comes from historical records such as oral histories and photographs taken during prohibition years which have been preserved at the county archives since then.
