In 1892, Arroyo Grande was the site of a gunfight between two groups of miners. One group, led by prospector and mine owner George Hinkle, killed three men and took their mining supplies. The other group, composed of miner John Fenton and his brother-in-law Ned McGee, retaliated with gunfire. A shootout ensued that left nine men dead on both sides. Three were wounded in the fight: one in the shoulder, one in the chest and one in the leg.

The Arroyo Grande River forms the town's south border and major street grid. West of town is rolling hills that support chaparral and oak trees; east of town are more open rolling farmland with some tile- roofs and houses. The community was founded in 1881 when prospectors seeking gold discovered rich reefs just south of present-day Arroyo Grande. At first, people built simple log huts on these reefs near what is now Main Street, but soon realized they would need to build more permanent homes if they were going to remain in business selling precious nuggets from their discoveries. They named their new settlement "Arroyo Grande", after one of the river's forks (the Arroyo Grande flows southeast into Sacramento). In 1907, a post office was established in Arroyo Grande; it continued serving until 1959. In 1927, an irrigation canal was completed through thecommunity giving it water for farming and other purposes from nearby rivers which had been used previously for milling flour or other industrial purposes only: this helped make Arroyo Grande one of the most important agricultural communities in southern California during that time period; today much of its acreage still remains within floodplain limits as a result. Arroyo Grande is a small town in Central California, located about 50 miles east of Los Angeles. The town was founded in 1853 by General Antonio Arroyo and his wife, Maria Elena Martinez. The history of Arroyo Grande began with the area that now makes up the town being part of Rancho San Fernando de los Cahuas Mexican land grant given to Josefina Garcia in 1821. In 1853, General Antonio Arroyo acquired this land from Mexico for $4 per acre. He renamed the area "Arroyo Grande" after his ranch near present-day Paso Robles, which he had also acquired in 1821. The first post office at Arroyo Grande was established on December 26, 1854. The name was changed to its current form on May 15, 1860. The first store in the town was built by John Ahern and Manuel Sanchez. Two more stores were built before the end of 1860; one by Prentice Wimmer and another by Jens Christensen (the son of Danish immigrant Andreas Christensen). In 1870–71, an act to establish public schools within California increased enrollment at Rancho San Fernando de los Cahuas school district from 1 student to 36 students and required passage through an interview process for students who did not meet tuition requirements set forth by state legislators at that time. On October 12th1870, a group of twenty men led by Reverend George Earle arrived at Arroyo Grande from Pasadena with hopes of establishing religious instruction within the community as well as working towards social improvements among its residentsJens Christensen acted as teacher/director/administrator for these new classes until his death on November 12th 1870due to natural causes only weeks after their establishment! Despite initial opposition from some residents over what they viewed asan imposition onto their personal privacyand certain claims that newly appointed trustees lacked proper qualifications or experienceamongst other things), Reverend Earle's efforts eventually yielded good results with both boys and girlsGraduating seniors observed during their last dayof schoolin 1870that: “There are now three churches within our limits (town) viz., Our Lady’s Catholic church (founded 1865), First Baptist Church (founded 1888) and Methodist Episcopal church (founded 1889). There are also ten wells scattered throughout our limits." A railroad station was built west of town along US 101 in 1902 but it closed down due to lack of passengers travelling westbound on Route 101 during those days! On July 6th 1903 Charles Fenton purchased 2 hectares northward from Lorenzo Reyes for $850 dollars cash plus 10% interest! This parcel became known as "Fenton Field".
