The town began as an agricultural community with grazing and irrigation rights on both sides of the San Joaquin River. By 1880, however, most residents had moved away for economic reasons and only 10% remained when Arroyo Grande was incorporated as a city in 1911. The first post office in Arroyo Grande opened in 1916. Prior to that time mail was delivered by stagecoach from Stockton or one of the surrounding towns

Arroyo Grande is a small community located in the San Joaquin Valley, about an hour and a half south of Fresno. The town was founded in 1887 by miners who descended from the Rancho Arroyo Grande grant, which had been given to José Santiago and Fernando de la Hoz in 1836. At its peak, Arroyo Grande had a population of over 1,500 people. However, the town declined after the discovery of gold in nearby Stockton in 1859 led to a dramatic increase in immigration to California. By 1870, only 100 people remained in Arroyo Grande. In 1912, when Arroyo Grande became part of California as part of Proposition 20 (the state's admission into the United States), it remained an agricultural center with small-scale ranching and farming operations. In 1940, Arroyo Grande experienced significant growth when it was included within the newly created City of Fresno. After World War II ended and Fresno emerged as one of California's largest cities, however, many rustling cattle operations were established near Arroyo Grande and other rural communities within Fresno County. This led to decreasing production at these towns and their subsequent decline over time. Today, few people live within Arroyo Grande proper; most residents instead commute to jobs outside the community or Fairfield County. nevertheless there are still remnant descendants who make their home here throughout the year
The first white people to live in Arroyo Grande were the Morongo Band of Mission Indians who arrived in 1827. The town was founded by José Antonio Arroyo and his brother Miguel Arroyo. It was named for Rancho San Ramon, which was located on the east bank of the river. In 1866, a post office was established inArroyo Grande, and the first mail service from Sacramento arrived here in 1868. In1872, an irrigation project called Rancho El Cielo was completed upstream fromArroyo Grande. This project led to increased agricultural production and helped make Arroyo Grande one of the most important cities in California. From 1916 to 1932, many small businesses operated out ofArroyo Grande; these include Winton's grocery store, Hennessey's dry goods store, la Casa de las Flores bakery, and Fritsche Bros., clothing stores. During World War II, Arroyogrande became a key strategic location as it served as a major airfield for the American military during the war effort. Additionally, numerous munitions plants were developed here during wartime times; these are now known as Armament Industries Incorporated (AII). When AII left California for good in 1984 following its purchase by McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Corporation (MDC), much of its manufacturing activity shifted back toArroyogrande - including some operations that remain today at MDC's Palmdale plant near Redondo Beach
