The first recorded meeting of target shooters in Arcata took place on October 10, 1875 when a group of men from Alameda County met to shoot at a range near the present day police station. There were only twelve people who attended the meeting and it is not clear what became of the others. The first organized shooting competition was held in 1886 and was won by George Weldon of San Francisco. In 1893, a local gamekeeper shot an ancient rifle which had been stored at his ranch for many years. When he brought it back to town, he built a Shooting Gallery at his ranch that served as the venue for the first organized shooting contests in Arcata. The origin story of today’s target holders is a bit more complicated than that though. It all started with two men who owned land next to each other on Highway 101 north of downtown Arcata and they began using their property as a firing range from about 1920-1930. From there, it grew into what we know today as Target Holders Club Ltd., one of the most successful small business enterprises in California history. From its humble beginnings, Target Holders Club has grown into one of the largest private businesses inArcata with over twenty-five thousand memberships worldwide! Arcata, California is a small city located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 30,814 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Sacramento-Arden-Arcade Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become Arcata was first settled by Native Americans in the 1800s. In 1851, it was given to John Sutter and his brother Jedediah Sutter by their Rancho San Francisco properties west of present day Sacramento. The settlement became known as Saints Ranch because many of its early residents were Catholic priests who moved to Arcata from other parts of California during the gold Rush era. In 1864, Captain Charles Waddell founded an adobe mission at Monterey Bay near what is now Hayward, CA on land that he had purchased from José Joaquin Murrieta and his partner Antonio Nunez. Waddell named this new outpost "Arcata" after Saint Alban, who died in 827 AD while helping build the church at Troyes in Normandy, France. The town's first post office opened on July 1, 1865 under the name "Fresno". In 1868, when Yosemite National Park was created adjacent to Yosemite Valley (the current site), much interest developed in exploring it and many people set out forays into Yosemite country beyond Stanford University's boundaries. So great were these explorations that soon there seemed no logical place for a rural community within easy reach of both national parks while still remaining within commuting distance toSacramento and other major cities; so on December 12th 1870 (eight days after President Ulysses S Grant signed legislation creating Yosemite) Mayor James Fenton designated Block #2 & 3 comprising sections 10 East 2nd Street southward thereof including all public lands lying east or northwest thereof inclusive as Township or Rural District of Arcata with power to provide for schools etc., arcate being bounded by said two blocks & certain lots adjoining thereto belonging to us lately occupied by Mrs Hutton’s family

Arcata, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of northern California. It was founded in 1853 by John Sutter and his family. The town has a population of about 8,000 people as of 2019. Arcata is located on the eastern edge of the Edwards Plateau, overlooking the Central Valley. The town is bordered to the north by Walnut Creek and to the east by Plumas County. The first recorded mention of Arcata was in 1853 when it was mentioned as "A Rancho situated on that part of Sacramento River which lies between Placer County and Mono County." In 1857, John Sutter established a post office at Arcata with four name changes: Unionville, Oroville, CPU (later called Placer City), and finally Arcata. On January 1, 1863, during World War II Japanese forces invaded United States territory northwest of Arcata along what is now Highway 101. The Battle for Hastings took place near present-day East Hanford Site where government troops were engaging Japanese forces led by Lieutenant Colonel Isamu Umezu. While some estimates say up to 150 people died in this battle including many women and children who were captured or killed outright, no accurate data exists about Japanese casualties because records were destroyed after the war ended. In 1946, an act was passed proclaiming Christmas Day as National holiday in California; this became law despite strong opposition from religious groups such as Methodists and Baptists who felt that religious observance should be kept separate from general holiday celebration. On December 25th each year since then there has been a public procession through downtown followed by ice cream socials for local kids sponsored by local businesses/associations before Christmas dinner at various locations around town serving traditional Americana cuisine like ham hocks with apple sauce or pumpkin pie made with whipped cream instead of sugar etcetera
