During World War II, sniper rifles were used extensively in battle to take down enemy commanders and other high ranking military officials. As snipers became better trained and better equipped, they began using sniper rifles with 3-4 inch barrel offerings that allowed them greater accuracy than earlier designs. Arcata, California is a small town located in Sonoma County, California. The population was 7,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The first post office in Arcata was established on February 26, 1868. The name of the town may be derived from an earlier name for it which was "Acapulco". Rancho San Pablo stretch across what is now the eastern edge of Arcata and included parts of what are today Arcata and Unincorporated areas east of Highway 1 within its boundaries. The first white person to set foot in Arcata was George Wickersham who arrived there on July 15, 1847 as part of a party led by Captain John Sutter with five other men searching for Gold nuggets in Ohlone County. He named his discovery "Wickersham Point" after himself and his friend William Wickersham (son of Colonel Robert Wickersham). In 1853-1854 two brothers by the name of Emigrant had a rancho grant from Ulysses S. Grant located northeast corner of present day 3rd Street & Business Avenue between Mission Creek Road & White Sands Road about 6 miles east (and south) of where present day El Sobrante Boulevard crosses Mission Creek near what is now Crescent City High School - this grant ran to perhaps 1000 acres or more including much later land grants west and northward extending into Yosemite National Park area etc.. One brother also had holdings in central Valley including Benicia & Bridgeport; another brother acquired northwestern corner donation lot Grant Farmstead including present day Storey Elementary School off Hwy 1 just past US 101 south entrance

Arcata, California is a small city in the Central Valley of California. The population was 25,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The towns that make up Arcata County were founded by Mexican immigrants in 1848 and 1850. They were named for Rancho Paraíso, a Spanish land grant near modern-day Fresno. In 1861, American Civil War hero General Ulysses S. Grant spent his winter here while on campaign in northern California. After the war ended, he returned to Arcata and began working as an assessor for local land developers. Grant's successor as governor of California, John Goodwin (1864–68), also lived in Arcata during this time and helped develop what is now downtown Arcata into a lively center of commerce and culture. In 1872, General James Marshall took over command of Union forces during the San Joaquin Gold Rush and sent troops to Arcata to build a military fortification known as Fort McDowell at present-day Broadway and New Bern Streets. The fort served as a key stop on supply trains transporting gold from the mines along the route between Sacramento and San Francisco. A new courthouse was built on Montgomery Street in 1874; it still stands today inside of City Hall building (pictured). In 1886,Arcata voters approved annexation by Sacramento but never actually followed through with it because they did not have enough funding to do so under their then-legal government structure; instead they chartered themselves as an independent city with their own mayor/council system."
On December 12, 1847, the California Gold Rush began when a group of men discovered gold in the Klamath Mountains. The rush was so successful that by 1850, there were over 50 towns and villages in California. Arcata was one of these settlements and it became known as the "City of Gold."
