In 1827-1829, David Hackett built a cabin on what is now calledHackett Road near present-day University Avenue in what is now known as North Arcata. This was his farmstead which still stands today. There are also reports that early residents of North Arcata included Nathaniel Palmer and Levi Coffin among others In 1834, Nathan Lane purchased Rancho Nacimiento fromCaptain John Brougham for $1275 dollars At this time there were only about 150 people living in Arcata proper with an additional 100 or so scattered throughout rural parts of northern Santa Clara County . The main business district in early days seems likely to have been William Tejon's mercantile establishment on Market Street between First and Second Streets., where goods were bought and sold by peddlers transporting goods down Mariposa Creek from nearby Monterey Junction . After Tejon died in 1800 his son Abel moved into business but soon ran out of buyers because no one wanted to trade with Indians anymore
