Arcata, California is a small city located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 7,839 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno–Madera, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Arcata was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. The land that now makes up Arcata was granted to John Day by Rancho San Joaquin de la Cañada de los Reyes on July 10, 1847. By 1870, there were over 1,000 residents living in what is now Arcata. By 1907, when it incorporated as a city, Arcata had grown to 621 residents and had outgrown its original location on Hwy 99W near Stockton. In 1911, City Hall was moved from downtown to the current location on S Broadway (now downtown). In 1933-1934 an urban renewal project increased the population of Arcata from 621 to 946 people with development taking place along S Broadway and other streets leading into town center including High Street and Market Street In 1957-1958 an annexation project occurred when portions of Stockton became annexed into Arcata creating a new city park named after then Mayor Forrest Sawyer which included land around present day Shasta Lake Park In 1984-1985 a comprehensive redevelopment project took place which saw much of what are now Downtown streetscape replaced with high rises housing developments Today arcatacity has continued to grow rapidly with residential areas expanding northward along S Broadway as well as eastward towards Highway 299. There are also several mixed use developments taking place such as The Commons at Shasta Lake Park containing office space and hotel rooms as well as retail spaces

Arcata, California is a small town in the southern end of San Mateo County, California. Situated on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay, it is northeast of Palo Alto and east of Redwood City. The population was 9,691 at the 2010 census. It once had a large population of Chinese immigrants who made up most of its workforce during the early 20th century. However, as Arcata's economy has changed over time and its demographics have shifted more towards the local community, much less attention has been paid to its Chinatown heritage. The area that now makes up Arcata was first home to Native Americans and later to Chinese laborers who helped build Telegraph Hill in 1851. In 1868, when Stanford University opened its new campus on land that once belonged to the Chuanshui family, many students from Arcata came to help laid out and develop Stanford's new campus. By 1900, about 60% of Arcata's residents were Chinese American citizens; however, this percentage declined over time as other ethnic groups increased their representation in the town. SinceArcata does not have a Chinatown neighborhood or commercial district like many other Northern California towns with similar names (e.g., Castro Valley), there are few opportunities for visitors or locals to learn about its Chinatown history firsthand. However, some archival materials available online do provide an interesting glimpse into how Arcata's Chinatown culture evolved over time: For example, one website offers sepia-toned photos taken near Golden Gate Park in 1898 which show immigrants working on various construction projects there alongside native Torontonians and others from across Northern California who had come for economic reasons rather than cultural ones (e.g., looking for opportunities outside their homes). In recent years however there has been increasing interest among both locals and visitors alike in learning more about arcadian Chinatown history – both through special events such as our own "Chinatown History Month" event held each month throughout 2018 whichfocused specifically on telling stories from diverse perspectives about Asian American settlement within Northern California - as well as through research projects focused on understanding how different aspects of Chinatown life have influenced contemporary life in Arcata including retail businesses and social dynamics within community organizations
When the first Europeans set foot in Arcata, California about 1843, it was a small farming town of about 100 people. The town was founded by Captain John Sutter on his Rancho San Francisco de Asís (now part of Berkeley), and soon became a important center for trade and transportation in the region. The first European to reside in Arcata were José Arguelles and his family who arrived in 1849. They were followed by Manuel Nieto in 1850, Don Vicente Gomez in 1851, Pedro Figueroa in 1852, Antonio Rivera in1854 and Agustín Castro y Villarreal with his family arrive from Mexico City on July 4th of that year. In 1861, the first post office was opened at Arcata with mail service coming three times per week. In 1870 the population had increased to 350 residents and by 1880 it had reached 1,000 people. By 1893 there were 5 schools within 10 miles of Arcata proper- four public schools and one private school which served both students and adults. In 1905 the first electricity was brought into town when an electric company built a substation just north of town near what is now called Sutter Park Boulevard. The population continued to grow rapidly as more businesses came online including breweries, lumberyards, banks and other businesses until World War II when most of these businesses closed down because of the bombings during that era which destroyed many businesses along with residential areas located nearby like North Bay Village east of Highway 101 between Lake Merritt Boulevard/Merritt Parkway/Bayview Drive and Marin County east of Highway 880 between Airport Way/Eraut Drive/Daly Avenue.)
