Arcata, California (formerly known as Modesto) is a city located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 79,569 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in the county and second-most populous city in Northern California after San Francisco. The metropolitan area has a population of over 281,000 people. The first European to visit Arcata was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 24, 1775, during his Second Voyage of Santa Cruz de la Sierra. On July 6, 1848 – three days before California was officially admitted as part of the United States – Ulysses S. Grant named it for General José Joaquín de Arce y Salinas y Pavón, who had fought against Mexican forces in 1846 and 1847 at Adobe Walls and Chullen Creek crossings respectively. On January 1st 1861, Arcata became an independent town when it annexed portions of Petaluma and Rohnert Park from Concordia College. The following year saw the opening of its first hospital with Drs. John Hulbert and George Thornton operated by Mrs. Lillie Grosse from her home on Spring Street between Third Avenue and Middle Street west of downtown Arcata northwest of Market Square Plaza which served as their office until 1915 when they moved to 415 First Street SW where they still operate today! In 1915 there were only 8 residents in Arcata; however within 10 years that number had grown to more than 100 due to the new development around Berkeley Boulevard NW which included many businesses such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Jardine Matheson & Co., Pacific Telesis Inc., AT&T Bell Laboratories etc.; also new housing developments such as Northridge Center (now Macy's), Southridge Shopping Center (now Macy's), Piedmont Place (Now Applebee's) etc... all adjacent to each other on what is now University Avenue NE between Fifth Street NE and Sixth Street NE making it one large commercial district with easy access to public transportation including bus lines 9A/B/C/D from Civic Center BART Station directly across University Avenue from much of this development! Finally some small agricultural settlements continued east along Ridge Road near modern day Hayward Airport until about 1910 when those holdings were transferred into Stanislaus County
Arcata is located in Silicon Valley, California. It was founded on December 12, 1875 by George W. Perkins and Edwin H. Smith as the town of Arcata on the west side of San Francisco Bay. The first post office opened in 1876. The city was named for Arthur Cady Arcata, a Commodore of the Onondaga Expedition who explored the central coast of California in 1821-22.
