Arcata, California is a city in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 7,917 at the 2010 census. It is located on Humboldt Bay and has a total area of 23.5 square kilometres (10.4 sq mi). The first Europeans to enter Arcata were the Spanish Armada crew led by Francisco Pizarro on November 8, 1541. They landed on Humboldt Bay in present-day Arcata and traveled northwestward until they came across some Willamette Valley Indians living near Point Reyes Station. The Spaniards named this place San Francisco de Asís because it resembled St Francis Xavier's birthplace in Spain. The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1839 when John C delusions purchased adobe land from José Joaquin Moraga for $2 per acre (0.68 km²). One hundred fifty acres (40 ha) were sold to five families: Jameson, Barker, Duffy, Ryan and McNaughton. In 1846 the town was founded as a result of an agreement between George Hearst and Manuel MirandaOrgazalez to build a wharf on Humboldt Bay so that goods could be unloaded and transported overland from Stockton and other ports to Yerba Buena Cove without having to pass through Arcata Strait. During World War II, the Navy built two airfields here – North Island Naval Air Station (now Vandenberg AFB) on northshore of town and South Island Naval Air Station (now Edwards AFB) just south of town – which served as training sites for B-29 Superfortresses flown out of Santa Ana Airport east of town during World War II. Although most active during World War II, North Island NAS closed its doors in 1945; South Island NAS stayed open until 1951 when it became Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton following completion of Marine Corps Training Area No 2 adjacent thereto at what is now Wright-Patterson AFB CA.. In 1955 the city annexed entirety of unincorporated areas includingpresent Day Niscasset Creek Ranchos east of downtown which are now part of the city limits while also incorporating portions of unincorporated agricultural districts lying within their limits dating back to before annexation such as parts around present day Eureka Straits northeast corner where Hailey Creek empties into Humboldt Bayou; past Utopia point west side along Laguna Beach Rd., Ionna Ct., Placer Gulch southeast corner next to current day Goodyear Lake; all these are included within today’sarcatacity limits
Arcata, California was founded in 1853 by John Sutter and his family. The first post office in Arcata was established in 1854. The town grew rapidly and by 1865 it had a population of over 100 people. By 1870, Arcata had a school and a library. In 1875, the city incorporated as a village and by 1880 it had a population of 2,500 residents. In 1915, the city annexed part of Santa Cruz County to become Arcata-Santa Cruz County.
