In the early 1800s, firearms were still a rarity in Arcata, California. The climate was too cold for farming and there was not enough water to support irrigation. So the townspeople took to hunting and fishing with their spears and bows. They used hand-held firearms for protection against predators, bandits, or other danger. Ultimately they bought 6 acres for $50 and started building their house on it in 1900. The Wright brothers also came to Arcata in 1900 and helped start the first local radio station called KQED-FM (). In 1906, when Arcata incorporated as a city under state law, its population was only 1,000 people; by 1920 it had grown to 940 residents. In 1951 City Manager Charles Ayer merged with other cities within Contra Costa County and became part of Hayward; howeverArcata retained its own police department until 1972 when that department was merged into Hayward's police force too). The city's growth slowed beginning in the 1970s as jobs moved out of town for mechanization or competition from neighboring Bay Area cities such as Berkeley and San Francisco (which began registering more than one million tourists annually by 1980). However starting around 1990 things picked up again with new businesses moving into town including technology companies like Apple Inc., Adobe Systems Inc., Googleplex Inc., Facebook OpenSource Solutions LLP (), Yahoo! Inc., Salesforce SE (), Oracle Corporation (), Twitter ()and Wayfair (). Today Arcata has over 100 businesses operating inside its downtown core plus another dozen or so scattered throughout its rural area satellite towns such as Turlock (about 15 miles east) and Milpitas (southwest of San Jose).

The town was founded in 1853 by brothers George and David Arcata on the banks of the American River, about 12 miles (19 km) southeast of Stockton. The first post office opened in 1854. In 1865, the townsite was named for General James H. Arcata as part of a general land grant to residents west of Sacramento from Governor Edmund Sutter. In 1876, John Sutter founded what would become Yosemite National Park within the Arcata community limits. Yosemite National Park became part of federal domain after Californias statehood in 1911; it remains a federally administered park with local control over most aspects including admission and management. Arcata has grown steadily since its incorporation as a city in 1906; its population reached 45,000 by 1940 and peaked at 64,711 during the 1990s before declining to 27,821 as of 2010. In recent decades, though not without controversy or protest over various issues such as gentrification and traffic congestion – all which have been exacerbated by global economic forces – arcata has seen significant growth in technology industry jobs and development that has brought new life to downtown areas adjacent to Lake Merritt (the citys largest water body). Downtown also experienced rapid redevelopment following two major earthquakes that struck central California in Northridge and Santa Maria just outside town limits on Dec 5th 2006 - both causing great damage but no fatalities within town boundaries despite hundreds injured or killed statewide by both tempers and collapsed buildings across many parts of Northern CA!

Arcata was founded by the Mexican Battalion on October 20, 1846. The town was named for Rancho Arctonga, a grant in present-day Santa Clara County. It first appeared on map as part of California in 1849. Arcata became an incorporated town on February 14, 1868.
