In 1906-07 there was a major fire that destroyed much of downtownArcata including many buildings dating back to the 1800s-1910s such as the Old Courthouse (now part of the ARCATA Library) which stood until 1907 when it burned down again due to lack of insurance coverage following a series of accidents involving oil rigs near town limits! The event made national headlines across America with articles being published in newspapers nationwide!! A new courthouse was built on State Street after this fire which served as the heartland for our city from 1907 until 1955 when it burned down again due to asbestos dangers!.
Arcata, California is a city in Northern California. The population was 16,812 at the 2010 census and is the most populous city in the Santa Cruz County area. It is also one of the fastest-growing cities in America. The name "Arcata" comes from two separate places: Arcata Creek and Arcata Heights. The creek was named for Rancho San José de Arco, a grant to Father Junípero Serra given by Alta Californian Governor Manuel Nieto on November 15, 1848. The heights were named for Don José Antonio Herrera y Montoya who donated land to town in 1868. The first permanent settler in Arcata was James Ackerwald of Stockton on October 25, 1876. Ackerwald built his house on what is now 4th Street near Redwood Road. He and his wife soon had six children and raised them here until their deaths in 1945 and 1966 respectively. Ackerwald's descendants continue to live here today as several families have contributed lands within the arcata hills neighborhood since then including: Anselm Strauss (1905-1993), Irving Kapp (1920-2006) Hiram Stevens (1922-) Norma Ziegler (1945-) . With over 350 years of history it's no wonder that this small community has managed to keep its unique spirit alive despite some challenges like arson back in 1903 which destroyed part of the original downtown business district

Arcata is a town located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 33,971 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous incorporated town in Contra Costa County. The town was founded on July 14, 1851 by John Fenton and James Hutton. It was named for Arthur C. Arcate, an American politician who served as mayor of San Francisco from 1898 to 1902 and as secretary of state under President McKinley in 1901-02. The first post office in Arcata opened on October 15, 1851. The town rapidly grew thanks to its location near the intersection of State Route 24 and Highway 37 (later Interstate 80). By 1870, Arcata had a population of over 200 people and two schools were built. In 1885, local citizens banded together to improve roads and bridges within the community. This effort led to the founding of the local transportation company that still exists today known as "Arcata & North Bay Railway". In 1905, Arcata became part of the new City of Berkeley after it was annexed by that city from Oakland.. HeARCATA
Arcata was founded in 1859 by Ezra Hastings and his wife Lucy. The town was named for the Arcadian goddess, Athena, who had been an important figure in Hastings' childhood. The first store opened in 1861. By 1865, Arcata had a population of about 100 people. In 1872, the Hastings family sold their holdings to a group of men led by Wm. Hargrave and James Gorman. Gorman renamed the town Arcata after himself, while Hargrave took control of the store and business district. In 1881, the Gormans sold their holdings to George Pemberton, who made additions to the business district and renamed it Arcata Heights. In 1907, Pemberton leased part of his property to André Ritchie for use as a shopping mall called Ritchie Plaza. In 1916, Harry Shoemaker arrived in Arcata from nearby Tomales Bay with his family and began operating a grocery store on Richards Road east of downtown. shoemaker's grocery was one of the earliest businesses inArcata and remained open until 1959 when it closed due to fire damage caused by lightning bolt strike
