Arcata, California is a small city located in the San Joaquin Valley of Fresno County, California. It has a population of just over 20,000 people and is the county seat for Fresno County. The town was first settled by Americans in 1847. The name comes from an Indian word meaning "the place where two water courses meet." The main watercourse is the Stanislaus River which flows through Arcata and provides drinking water to much of northern Fresno County as well as parts of southern Kern and Bakersfield Counties. The city was originally named for Capt. John Sturt, who explored what is now Orange County in 1769-70. On July 4, 1847, James Ketchum founded Arcata on land he had purchased from the Lipan Apache Indians near present-day Northern Yosemite National Park. At that time the only settlement within present-day Arcata boundaries was Shasta City (organized in 1853), about 8 miles east of town on Umpqua Road. In 1865, when gold was discovered near Shasta City, settlers began to move into Arcata and gradually built up the population until it reached its current size of 20,000 in 1910. The first post office opened in 1851; it changed its name to Arcata on October 3rd that year after being moved from Crescent City to be closer to the emerging community of Milpitas (now part of Silicon Valley). By 1886 there were three hotels and two stores operational in town - one owned by George Hines and one by Wm Folsom Sr., both men active in early local politics. One account reports that “In those days there were few telephone lines or electric lights so all business must have been conducted either by letter or messenger” Arcata’s growth accelerated during World War II as military personnel stationed nearby drew attention to potential minerals located around Stanislaus Creek – including uranium ore at Oak Flat and milling resources at Beale Air Force Base – making new businesses such as logging companies necessary for war production needs such as ammunition storage yards and aircraft assembly plants . Steel production also increased during wartime due to shortages caused by diverted shipping lanes during World War I; mills like those at Beale produced thousands of barrels per day from 1942 until 1945 alone After the end of World War II, industrial growth slowed while jobs wastelanded following weapons proliferation fears throughout most Western nations; however some new businesses did emerge with technology firms like Hewlett Packard beginning operations here before they migrated offshore elsewhere Arcata experienced rapid growth following passage of Prop 209 , becoming a fully functioning government with its own school system (including fusion high schools) and full Medicaid program starting services here on January 1st 1995 During this time many downtown buildings were renovated/upgraded/remodeled including several large complexes housing state agencies/ bureaucracies ; initial reactions ranged from disdainful chroniclers such as author Don Freeman who called it “a shabby imitation [of] traditional Californian architecture” but soon came to appreciate how well done these renovations actually were given their modest budget . Arcata, California is a small town located in the Central Valley of California, about an hour's drive north of Los Angeles. The population was 5,869 at the 2010 census and it is the county seat of Contra Costa County. The townsite was originally established by post-and-railroad builder James Irvine in 1876 as part of his new chain of stations on the Santa Fe Railroad. At first, only men were allowed to live there; later families were added. The name "Arcata" comes from two Spanish words meaning "the place where good wheat grows" (Acapulco). In 1916, when Arcata became a city, its citizens voted to change their name to Arcata because they wanted people familiar with the city's location and climate to know what it looked like. The current spelling is based on a suggestion from then-Mayor Gordon Welsh in 1978. The town has changed hands several times since it was founded: It was bought by John Denson in 1902 for $5,000; it was taken over by war veterans during World War II; it belonged to local farmers until 1949; and finally it came under control of the Chevron Corporation in 1951. Since then, much progress has been made in Arcata: The original shopping center opened in 1961; residential subdivisions were built around 1960s; the first intercity bus service arrived here in 1965; and now arcatexpress dot com provides online shopping opportunities for locals and visitors alike. One significant development that took place during this time period was the construction of Interstate 580 through central Arcata – which helped bring economic stability to this rural corner of California. Additionally, many major federal offices have located here such as United States Courts Building (1962), Congressional Beatification Office (1984), and National Security Agency Headquarters (2001).
Arcata, California was founded on December 11, 1847 by the team of General George C. Marshall and Commodore John W. Sloat. The town was named for Captain Fortunato Arcangeli who had fought in the Mexican-American War and also helped found Oregon City in 1846 while on a military expedition.
