The townsite was first developed by brothers Elias and George Street in 1859 and it became Arcata after being given its name by Captain John Brougham of HMS Beagle who visited the area in 1836. The origins of Arcata date back to 1859 when two brothers named Elias and George Street bought 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land east of today's downtown for $10 per acre (1 ha). TheStreet family built a grant school on their holdings which served as an elementary and high school until 1915. In 1861 they founded the Western Pacific Railroad Company with tracks running through their property to connect Stockton with Sacramento via San Francisco Bay. The company had two stations: One near present-day Interstate 805 and one near where Peralta Avenue meets Capitol Drive today. In 1865, Captain John Brougham sailed his ship "Beagle" off Yerba Buena Island in search of new land to explore during his circumnavigation of America. He stopped at Arcata's waterfront for lunch and called it "Arcatta" after his ship's mizzen masthead flagstaff inscription above one of its piers (the current listing site for this structure can be seen at www.parksandrecreation.ca/hs2a/beagle/ LocationMap_3D). Commodore James Kenedy also stopped there while searching for a route between San Francisco and Vancouver Island but never arrived at his destination because he lost power en route due to storm damage on November 12th,. Lieutenant Commander David Wickersham chartered HMS Beagle on October 4th,, 1841 enroute from Monterey Bay to Victoria Harbor and chartered her under command of Commodore James Kenedy to explore what lay beyond Alacrity Strait (& now part of Johnston Atoll) - Before reaching Barkley Sound on September 11th,, 1840 she made landfall about halfway between Humboldt Bay & Southern Coast Ranges along what is now US 101 Alternate.. This early exploration inspired author Nathaniel Hawthorne’s famous short story “The Blithedale Romance” which begins with the line “In these parts was an old man who went by the name of Sam Anson...he had been aboard Humboldt Bay boat %7CBeagle%7D when that terrible storm destroyed her” On April 10th, 1861 ARCATA OFFICIAL JOURNAL reported that Captn John Brougham landed hereabout noon having first passed us about 9 A M last year Previous boats have not found this place.- On May 2d Elisha Muir discovered live oak trees around Presidio Creek.- On Aug 3rd Captn John Brougham again anchored hereabouts midnight awaiting tide making camp this time next day he left goods ashore including stores provisions & Tools.- Sept 5th Lieut Col Fremont attacked Point Reyes lighthouse from sea seeming we may need help getting supplies ashore-Sept 7 Captn John Bougham anchored hereabouts noon waiting tide bringing over filled sacks full o goods then leaving them behind as he Anchored- Sept 10 Captain John Brougham anchored about 25 NM SE point Reyes light bearing NNW breasted rock group night fall Facing NW Estuary mouth current pulling him towards Rock Group morning Nov 12th Lt Colonel David Wickersham arrived Desiring information respecting road leading from Sabrina Harbor into Portola Valley orCoastal Road leading out thence Norman Butte From There Watercraft could follow either Way.– Afternoon LtCol David Wickersham anchor'd hereabout sun setting side effecting rocks shoaling so much that Vessel could not get alongside without assistance EveningNov 13Lt Col David Wickersham came upon Shipwrecked Men living among Natural Trees some distance below water depth thought they were Indians.- Nov 15 LtColDavidWickersham ordered all Ships coming outof harbor To leave immediately For fear they might become targets Of hostile Indians

Arcata, California is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and is located on the east side of Carquinez Strait. The area now known as Arcata was first settled by Native Americans in two groups: the Ohlone and Pomo people. The Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded in 1776 by Franciscan missionaries. In 1868, following the Gold Rush and settlement of Northern California, Arcata became part of United States Mexico under General Antonio Meade as part of Rancho Section 891. In 1872, following American victory over Mexican forces at Buena Vista Creek near modern-day North Richmond Heights, ownership of Rancho Section 891 reverted to Mexico. During this time there were efforts to develop land here for ranching or development into townships or villages but these failed due to opposition from local landowners and officials who saw potential commercial opportunities elsewhere in the region. In 1906, a group including civic leaders James Fenton and Winthrop Sargent formed what would become known as the Association for Industrial Development (AID) to promote development in what would become Arcata. AID's first project was creating an agricultural fair which took place on May 15–18 at Whatcom Agricultural Fairgrounds.. The fair attracted attention from businesses throughout downtown Arcata and led to more permanent development around it including Waddell’s grocery store which opened its doors on October 12th 1912 .. In 1916 a new courthouse was built with money provided by AID; it has been used since then as headquarters for various government agencies such as Alcoholic Beverage Control Department and State Department of Food Services.. The 1920s were marked by changes within Arcata itself with the growth of manufacturing industries along with increasing crime rates which led city officials to establish a police department in 1925.. In 1930Arcata voters passed an ordinance establishingь artificial boundaries for their town so that suburbs could not annex it without voter approval.. This caused some concerns among residents about becoming encircled by other municipalities while still living within their own community.. One issue facingArcATA during this time was its lack of water resources; although surface water supplies had been improved over time through municipal treatment plants facilities operated by the City Water Authority (CWA), shortages continued to exist especially during times of drought when rechargeable groundwater sources became available; however CWA has since converted most underground tanks into rechargeable devices providing significant relief from water scarcity conditions . There have been many technological advances made within arcATA during this time including: establishment in 1957 of Silicon Graphics Incorporated (SGI) - one of America's earliest high-technology companies - as well as contributions from Bell Laboratories scientists Jack Welch and Gordon Moore who developed technologies that allowed computersized appliances like refrigerators and ovens to be produced cheaply outside North America; also during this period arcATA experienced rapid population growth with approximately 20% annual growth rate between 1950-1970 . Some notable accomplishments include: establishment in 1972of UC Berkeley's School Of Science And Technology which later became one of America's leading research universities; establishmentin 1984ofthe present day Park Slope neighborhood adjacenttoARCATOWN containing some world class cultural institutions like Brown Universityand New York Universityamong others;installationofthefirst digital camera systemin 1978 .. These advances have helped create new economic opportunities within arcATA while preserving much traditional cultural values
The first permanent settlers in Arcata were the Menomonee Indians in 1821. The first post office was established in 1827, and the town's incorporation was granted on November 3, 1846. The first store was opened in 1850. By 1870, the population had grown to around 100 people.Arcata became a city on January 1, 1907.
