In 1865, Governor Pio Pico created the city of Arcadia from portions of Rancho San Marcos that had been annexed into Los Angeles County. In 1907, a group of businessmen organized what would become known as the "Arcadian Knights" to provide social and economic support for their town. Membership required men who could own property within Arcadia limits and make monthly contributions totaling $5. Members also had exclusive use of the town hall until it was sold in 1916 to George Wickersham Jr., one of California's most powerful businessmen and political figures at the time
