Arcadia, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. It was first settled in 1853 by the Humboldt Party as part of their journey to explore the Gold Rush. Arcadia became a census-designated place (CDP) in 1959 and has since been consistently among the fastest-growing areas in Kern County. The population of Arcadia increased from 2,605 people in 2000 to 4,873 people in 2010. The history of Arcadia can be traced back to 1853 when two groups of American miners led by John Sutter arrived at Independence Pass on the Kern River. They were looking for rich gold deposits that would lead toUSA glory during the Mexican-American War. The town was founded on April Fool's Day 1854 by James Fenton and his brother Amos Fenton, who had come down from Sacramento with other members of the Humboldt Party. Fenton named his new community after one of his father's old friends, Cyrus Gates Goddard (1792-1868), a lawyer and politician who had played a significant role in helping organize California's initial Gold Rush settlements at Suttersville and Yuba City. Arcadia quickly grew into an important outpost on the western edge of what would become Kern County. By 1860, it boasted three stores, four blacksmiths, six lawyers, twentyfive farmers and seventy-five workers associated with various mining camps along the Kern River valley. In 1861 migration began to Arcadia specifically because of problems with malaria caused by mosquitoes breeding near water sources used for irrigation like those found near Indio Creek south of town. A number of hotels were built around this time including one called "The Inn" which still stands today next to Interstate 5 just east of downtown Arcadian proper.
