The city had a population of 100 people when it was incorporated on December 12, 1865. The first post office in Arcadia was established on October 16, 1876 by A.J. Whitehead with Payson as its mailing address. The name change came about because residents were asking for an easier way to spell "arcadian". Arcadia experienced its heyday during World War II due to its strategic location between Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay Area; it became one of the most heavily bombed towns in California during that time period with over 70% loss of life measured inside or around town limits alone!
