The name "Apple Valley" likely comes from an early Spanish mission called San Gabriel Arcángel (meaning "Holy Archangel"). The first known settler in what is now Apple Valley was David Peralta in 1847. In 1865, General James Van Buren sent Colonel George Armstrong Custer to attack the Mexican village of Montebello on November 10th as part of his drive for Santa Fe. A skirmish took place near Apple Valley between American and Mexican forces and no injuries were reported among either side; however, one horse was killed by a cannon ball that hit a tree about two miles away from Apple Valley. This event has been inaccurately portrayed as the Battle of Adobe Walls which actually took place south of Apple Valley on October 9th where American forces destroyed aMexican cavalry force under José Joaquin de la Peña y Castro. In 1893, Jesse Owens won three gold medals at the Olympic Games in Athens while living in Pasadena; he moved to Apple Valley soon after to become involved with local community organizations and continue his racing career there until his death in 1972. The name Apple Valley comes from the first place reached by wagon train travelers on their way to San Bernardino in 1849: "Appleseed", which was named for a hill near where Appleseed Meadows are now located. The name may also come from an Indian word meaning "apple orchard." The first house in Apple Valley was built in 1851 by John and Emma Hargrave. In 1872, Charles Fenton purchased land adjacent to what is now Apple Valley High School and began to build what would become Fenton Elementary School. The school opened in 1873. In 1899, A&P Grocery Store opened its doors in what is now the store’s parking lot. At that time, it was one of only a few grocery stores open within walking distance of most residents. The store soon became well known throughout Northern California for its quality groceries and unique products such as apple pies and applesauce. During World War II, following Pearl Harbor, many people moved into Apple Valley to work on defense plants such as Lockheed Martin's Skunk Works location here at Saginaw Avenue and Winchester Road (now Glenn Highway). Other plants included Ford Motor Company's Inglewood Assembly Plant at 6th Street and Lankershim Boulevard; Kaiser Permanente's Downey Health Center; Southern Pacific Railroad's Rancho Mirage Yard; and various other companies' locations including Rockwell Automotive Division's Fremont plant at 5555 Noll Drive West; GE Electrical Division's Menlo Park plant at 12333 Cecil Avenue East; Burroughs Corporation's North Hollywood plant at 2525 Santa Monica Boulevard South; American Motors Corporation’s Willowbrook factory at 8100 WEST Covina Blvd.; RCA Victor’s Encinitas facility north of Interstate 10 (now University City) on Canoga Drive east of I-10 just south of State Route 151/Highway 138 about 4 miles east of downtownEncinitas
