The Gunshop was soon successful, and Smith decided to start selling firearms legally. In 1938, he opened an additional Gunshop in the old post office on State Street. By 1940, Smith had two Gunshops and four retail stores in Apple Valley. By 1945, there were 10 gun stores in California operating under the name "Smith & Wesson." At that time, Apple Valley became one of the most important cities in California because it was home to many military bases and defense contractors. This led to increased demand for firearms, which lead to the creation of more Gunstores across the state. In 1969, Harry H. Smith's son-in-law John Lampley purchased the Gunshop chain from his father-in-law Harry H. Smith Jr.. From then until 1996, John Lampley served as CEO of Smith & Wesson Firearms USA Inc., which is headquartered in Springfield Township, New Jersey (the original home of America's first firearm manufacturing company). The first apple orchard was started on this land in 1870 by James Fenton's son Hiram Fenton II. The property passed through four generations of family hands until 1945, when it was purchased by IBM Corporation's Bob Workman and his wife Harriet Workman for $10 million in what became known as the Apple Valleysettlement. Workman began manufacturing computers at his new campus in nearby Hanford City and needed space to store them. He donated 2,425 acres (1,000 hectares) east of Apple Valley to IBM for use as a research center called Research Park USA. When work moved out from Research Park USA in the early 1990s, most of the industrial sites within 500 feet (150 metres) of where they had been built were razed; however, some remain today such as Intel’s Experiment Station #2 near milepost 35 on Interstate 5 near Scripps National Forest; Google’s 1 acre site near El Sobrante; Motorola Solutions’ 3 campuses between Salinas and Visalia; Hewlett Packard’s Palo Alto Campus; AMD’s facilities northwest of Stockton; and many other companies over time including Pixar Animation Studios', Lucasfilm Ltd.'s George Lucas' ranch south west of Menlo Park which sat on 6 square miles (15 square kilometres). Today much remains that once housed these big corporations but has been turned into public open space such as Intel's Experiment Station #2 just outside milepost 35 on I-5 next to Scripps National Forest while others have been absorbed into adjacent towns such as Livermore or East Palo Alto with their own post office buildings still standing today like AMD's Palo Alto Campus which sits atop an old oil refiner complex now used for housing purposes before being demolished for that purpose The townspeople are involved in various aspects of their community life including government, education, agriculture/forestry/water resources management etc., but also sports teams that compete in various leagues around Northern California: USDGC golf courses located throughout downtown Apple Valley include two championship courses: one at Mission Hills Golf Course off Moorpark Avenue and one at Cedar Fairgrounds just eastsideof Main Street with greens fees starting at $39 per round for amateur play plus cart rental fees if you want to head out onto Hwy 395 opposite Interstate 5
