Apple Valley, California is an incorporated town in Mariposa County, California, United States. The population was 8,823 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno–Chico metropolitan area. Apple Valley is located on the Feather River about south of Fresno and east of Stockton. The first people to set foot in what is now Apple Valley were two American citizens, Jedediah Smith and his wife Eliza Jane Smith, who traveled from Independence Missouri on July 26, 1847 to survey a route for a wagon road between Sacramento and Redding. They named their valley after their hometown of Appleton in Fairfield County where they had been born and raised. In 1858 John Cranch discovered gold near what is now Apple Valley while prospecting for claims along the Feather River northwest of Fresno. This led to extensivemining operations in that region over the next few years as various men tried to find new veins of gold. The discovery by George Hahn and his son-in-law Jock Hahn at Anza Mesa in 1863 led to more serious mining operations as they discovered large deposits of silver ore near present day Visalia and Madera counties north of Fresno proper. By 1865 those activities had produced over $10 million worth of gold coins which were brought back into the United States by sea through San Francisco Bay before being melted down and turned into moneysupplies for war efforts during the Civil War. apple valley post office was established on December 12th 1887 under name "Ammonton". On January 1st 1892 it changed its name to "Apple Valley" with incorporation as a town within Mariposa County. The main street leading up from central business district (CBD) does not intersect with any other streets until you reach University Avenue which leads southeast towards Yosemite National Park boundary just beyond Mono Lake

In 1969, Apple Inc., which had been founded two years earlier by Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, moved its headquarters from Seattle to Cupertino. At that time it was one of only a few companies headquartered outside major metropolitan areas in the United States; other examples include Intel and Microsoft. The company built an additional 420 acres (160 hectares) outsideCupertino called Silicon Graphics International Ltd., or SGI for short. SGI became one of Silicon Valley's most important economic engines during the 1990s through its production of software applications used by Hollywood directors such as Steven Spielberg and James Cameron
