Apple Valley, California is located in the Mono Mountains of central California and it became known as the "Valley of Apple Trees" for the numerous apple trees that lined its streets. The valley was first populated by Native Americans, who gathered apples to eat from the trees. In 1868, John Sutter founded the Sutter's Fort Colony in present-day Sierra Nevada County, California, and began selling goods to miners and their families. In 1872, he founded the Empire fruit company in what is now Fremont and began shipping apples to markets in North America. In 1904, Charles W. Smith established a fruit packing plant in Apple Valley that became one ofthe largest packing plants in California. Smith produced more than two million pounds of apples per year until his death in 1928. His son Harry continued production until his father's death in 1951. Since becoming an incorporated municipality in 1995, Apple Valley has undergone dramatic growth with annexations from adjacent communities including Menlo Park, Palo Alto, East Palo Alto, Lafayette Hills and Newark Liberty International Airport (now KQED). In 2017 alone, annexed communities added over 2,000 residents while housing projects have sprung up to accommodate the increase in population: Westview Heights features 625 homes built between 2014 and 2016; Glen Ellyn’s Hickory Hollow subdivision will feature 1,500 homes built from 2019 through 2023; Southvale’s Sunrise Ridge complex will include 1 million square feet (100 hectares) of office space across 10 buildings; North Highlands plans to add 675 homes over 5 years; former industrial areas such as Newark Township are being redeveloped into mixed-use neighborhoods with commercial/residential spaces and open-air parks – all within minutes' walk of downtown Apple Valley itself
