Apple Valley, California is a small town located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 7,813 as of the 2010 census. It is part of Sacramento County. The first known inhabitants of Apple Valley were the Hupa people who lived there before migrating to present-day Humboldt County. The area was part of a large hunting and gathering village which probably covered about 10 square miles (25 square kilometers). In 1828, Rancho Santa Rosa was granted to James Irvine by Mexico for his ownership of land in what is now Apple Valley. George Cripe established cattle ranchos here in 1846 and built two churches on the original grant land: one in 1849 and one in 1870. In 1868, John Smeaton founded the first post office in Apple Valley with three buildings: a store, an office, and a hotel. A wagon road led from nearby Stockton to reach Smeaton's postoffice; passengers could walk or ride horseback up to seven miles (11 km) away. In 1896, Apple Valley became part of Sacramento County when it was organized out of parts of Placer and Yolo counties. At that time it had a population numbering less than 100 people. On July 1, 1907 Govus Fenton opened the first local bank within Sacramento County when he created Capitol Banking Company with six branches statewide including one at Apple Valley; this company merged into First NatWest Bank on December 15th 1978.) The 1909 Rose Parade took place through the town on its main street where floats included models representing all aspects of agriculture from hogs to chickens; apple picking demonstrations also took place throughout town during that year’s parade route
