Apple Valley's growth was slow during World War II due to the absence of military housing nearby. However, after the war began there was rapid postwar growth as businesses moved in from Southern California: one such business being Wernham Hogg Paper Company which produced paper products for soldiers returning home from overseas service. In 1957 Apple Valley became part of Riverside County when it was split off from San Bernardino County; however social isolation continued to exist within Apple Valley due to its remote location. The last resident died in 1990s but culture continues to be passed down through family members who own businesses in Apple Valley today: many of these businesses are involved with farming or natural resource extraction such as hunting and fishing outposts between Menlo Park and Riverside counties
