In 1892, Daniel Webster founded D&W Arms in Apple Valley after leaving his company Armour &Co., now Brownells Incorporated (). Out of these experiences at Armour &Co., Daniel Webster Developed what we know as "the first self-loading rifle." The rifle was called the “Webster Rifle” because it was marketed to Ulysses S Grant during the American Civil War (1861-1865). The weapon earned its fame for its effectiveness against Confederate forces during that conflict; however, it ultimately failed to achieve battlefield success due to relatively low ammunition prices at the time (.50 caliber bullets only had a muzzle velocity of 375 mph). In 1898 D&W Arms merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company (now Winchester Ammunition) creating what is now America's largest firearm manufacturer (). At this point, John Manton's cannons had transitioned from being production cannon manufacturers into designing rifles/shotguns under license from Winchester Repeating Arms Company
