Antioch, California is a small city located in Los Angeles County, California. It is the home of the Antioch Mission and shrine complex, as well as one of the largest military installations in Southern California. The city was founded by Mexican Americans on December 20, 1868, and became an American town on January 1, 1869. The original inhabitants of Antioch were primarily Mexican settlers from Baja California who had come overland to join Mexico's revolt against United States rule in 1846-1847. These Mexicans built their homes around what is now First Baptist Church and founded businesses such as Antonio's Mercado Mexicano (now known as Starbucks) and the Santa Fe Hotel. A few years later a group of Anglo Americans arrived to help these early colonists build their new town. They named it Antioch after James Fenton Armstrong, an Englishman who had helped lead Mexican forces against U.S.-backed insurgents at Monterrey during the 1850s. In 1886–87 two massive earthquakes occurred in Southern California which caused significant damage to buildings and infrastructure throughout the region including Antioch. This event marked perhaps the most serious natural disaster to hit southern Californian since Gold Rush days; many people died as a result of collapsed houses, landslides, fires and floods that swept through towns across Kern County during those weeks followingshocks alone. This devastation also created some of America's first social divisions; while many residents spent months rebuilding they quickly realized that they needed more than just reconstruction vehicles or tents to stay alive: they needed jobs! In response to this need for housing production rapidly began building subdivisions throughout downtown Antioch with plots selling for anywhere from $5 per acre up until $25 per acre today - something unheard of back then! One outcome of this rapid growth was another major landmark for Antioch - its incorporation into Los Angeles County on October 15th 1898 becoming one of only a handful of cities in county history to do so without prior vote or annexation proceedings!
In 1881, Antioch was established as a city on the Santa Clara River. It became a county seat in 1892.
