Antioch, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. It was founded on December 12, 1879 by John C. Fremont and James W. Richardson as the first permanent settlement in the area now known as Contra Costa County. The City of Antioch was incorporated on February 14, 1914. The population was 71,594 at the 2010 census. The name Antioch comes from an ancient town in Syria called Ἀντιμερόπολις or Antepolis (meaning "city of Peace"), which may have been modeled after Alexandria in Egypt or Damascus in Syria. In 1820 Augustus Scott located a trading post at Antioch and named it Scott's Ranch after himself and his brother-in-law Captain David Stuart Scott of HMS Beagle fame who had explored Central America during that voyage under Captain Cook's command some years earlier. At this time there were several small settlements near the junction of the Bay Bridge and San Leandro Rivers but no town large enough to support a full-time military garrison; so it was not until 1829 when General Mariano Escobar purchased land south ofuyo Creek for $1 per acre that an actual permanent settlement began to form." Fremont built two warehouses at what is now Civic Center Square – one original with walls up to 20 feet high and another added later using salvaged lumber from old Russian Fort Point across the bay – possibly because he saw such promise as a port for inland shipping due to its location on an estuary close to Monterey Bay.
