Antioch was founded in 1795 by Juan Manuel Margarita and her husband, Mariano Vallejo. The city was named for the ancient Roman city of Antioch, which served as a military headquarters for California during the Mexican-American War. The margaritas were from Chivas Regal, a distillery in Tequila that became one of the largest in California. The city experienced rapid growth during its early years due to its location on the border of two powerful empires: Mexico and America. In 1821, after Mexico's victory over Texas at San Antonio de Bexar, most of what is now California became part of Mexico under President Vicente Guerrero. As a result, Antioch lost much of its importance as an American port town but still continued to grow due to its trade with both countries. In 1846, after United States forces defeated Mexican troops at Buena Vista Creek near modern-day Sacramento County, most of what is now California reverted back to Mexico under General Antonio López de Santa Anna. This left Antioch as the only American town within Mexican territory remaining outside the newly formed Republic of Texas. Consequently, it began to experience heavy immigration from southern United States in search of work in Mexico City and other major cities across North America. In 1850s and 1860s many businesses were established within the limits of Antioch including flour mills (founded by Jameson & Co.), saddles and harnesses manufactories (owned by John Woolsey), meatpacking plants (owned by JBS), livery stable (founded by George Witherspoon), breweries (owned by Anheuser-Busch) and banks (owned by several large companies). With Hispanic majorities throughout much of northern California during this time period; business owners turned their attention towards developing new markets inside or nearbyMexico City instead of expanding into new areas such asCalifornia. Businesses like those mentioned above grew rapidly but did not Metropolis until after 1910 when World War I led to increased demand for goods exported fromthe US mainland despite tariffs being levied against any imports destined for Californian market
