Antioch, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 59,715 at the 2010 census. Antioch is the fifth-largest city in the county and the largest in Contra Costa County by population. The first Europeans to visit Antioch were Spanish soldiers on their return from Mexico City in 1769. They named it San Francisco de Asís after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna (1724–97), who had been appointed governor of Mexican America and then commander-in-chief of all the army there. Mexican missionaries arriving later called Antioch "Agua Dulce" or "Sweet Water". In 1821, John Cranch discovered gold near what is now downtown Antioch and decided to name his new settlement after him. He recommended that it be called "Angleterre", but no one wanted to take on such an honorific name so he changed it back to Antioch. By 1847, part of Contra Costa County had been annexed into Oakland; as a result, Angleterre became Oakland's first incorporated town. In 1853, during the Gold Rush period of American history several businesses took advantage of available water supplies south of Hayward in order to start mayonnaise production using lime juice instead of vinegar due to high costs associated with vinegar production at that time. This led to what is now known as the Mayonnaise Wars between various business owners over who could produce mayonnaise more cheaply than others - which ultimately led to prices coming down for all types of goods beginning in earnest around 1915 when refrigeration became common throughout North America

Antioch was founded in 1848 as a result of the California Gold Rush. The town grew quickly due to its location at the junction of two important trails, the Humboldt Trail and the Donner National Road. By 1860, Antioch had a population of over 2,000 people. The town’s growth continued through the late 1800s and into the 1900s, thanks in part to its large and well-developed commercial sector. In 1912, Antioch was incorporated as a city within San Francisco County. Despite this growth, Antioch experienced some lows during its history – including a significant fire that destroyed much of the town in 1915. However, overall it has made steady progress since then and remains an important community today. The history of Antioch begins with settlers who arrived in Alta California in 1847. One such group was led by John Cranch, who purchased land east of downtown for $4 per acre. This area eventually became known as East Downtown Antioch because it housed most of the initial business activity within the new town boundaries. Over time, other settlements were erected along these same boundaries – each serving specific purposes or providing support for one another while preserving their individual character. One such settlement was West Downtown Antioch (later renamed North Downtown), which stood near what is now Market Street/Elma Avenue on what is now downtown Antioch’s eastern edge (now part of South Park). This------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- small community functioned primarily as a stoplight on Highway 1 between San Francisco and Sacramento; it also served as a dumping ground for local trash after storms swept through metropolitan areas nearby each year. Despite this early development effort – which involved many individuals from different parts of Northern California – little seems to have been done to create cohesion between these various communities until around 1850 when wealthy businessman Moses Chapman decided to open up goldmining operations in central & eastern California under his new name “Moses Chapman & Brothers Mines” (although no record exists documenting this company actually existing until this time). By 1851, gold had been discovered at Folsom Creek north of modern day Fresno; however production throughout Central Valley remained modest at best due to difficulties getting access to quality ore deposits close to established towns like Sacramento and San Francisco (the latter having become exceedingly rich thanks largely to hydraulic mining methods developed during previous decades). Consequently, Chapman decided instead to open up his mines west of modern day Fresno instead; he named hisnew mine “Antioch” after his old home village in England where he had first settled following his return from America’s great strike out against British rule four years earlier (see sidebar below). A number of local entrepreneurs followed suit soon thereafter - including Elisha Stout who built an extensive silver refinery adjacent to what is now I-80 exit 134 southbound on six acres northeast of present day downtown Antioch prior to turning it into an operating plant manufacturing lead acid batteries c1892-1902; Augustus Kelley opened up an oil refinery on Sutter Street southwest corner First Avenue/Palo Alto Rd circa 1890-1896; Jens Hansen built two hotels next door each other on Eighth Street circa 1895-1900 (& later moved them both downmarket); Alfred Lawson constructed several stores & restaurants before closing them all down for assorted reasons circa 1910 circa 1920 etc.; etc .... . . . . . . ..... .... In order for businesses located within or adjacent thereto either directly or indirectly responsible for putting money into circulation within our own city limits numerous events took place sanctioning industry development w/out congressional fiat eitbronzing Andrew Goodman's law firm becoming `the legal arm'of `the good guys' Antioch thereby legitimizing economic activities without any negative consequences ensuing ...... ..... ....
