In 1847, the United States acquiredadditional land south of the original rancho grant for what became Contra Costa County. This included parts of what are today Antioch and Walnut Creek townships. When American troops withdrew from China during World War II, much of that countryside was returned to Chinese hands including most of Antioch which means "border town." However, because America had defended China against Japan during World War II, many Japanese immigrated into America following the war and founded businesses here such as Mitsubishi Motors Company (a mainstay in East Oakland), Toyota Motor Corporation (headquarters for Toyota truck production until 1985) and Kao Corporation (one of America's largest distributors of natural gas). One notable business established here in those days was Jardin Pharmaceuticals Inc., which manufactured pain relief drugs such as hydrocodone for Americans during wartime years before it went public in 1971 under the name Warner-Lambert Co., Inc.. Today there are few remnants remaining from those days except for some old warehouses along Interstate 680 just east of downtown that once housed Jardin Pharmaceuticals Inc.'s manufacturing plant; today they house an antique store and several restaurants specializing in Japanese cuisine

In 1864, the United States Army occupied Antioch during the Civil War as part of General Robert E. Lee's army movements through northern California. By 1920, Antioch's population had shrunk to just under 50 residents but it remains an important cultural center today with its own history museum and college campus.
Byzantine and Roman Catholicism were both dominant in Antioch during the height of its influence. The city was also home to a flourishing Jewish community which flourished under the rule of the rabbis. In response to this burgeoning population, Antioch developed a strong cultural base, including a thriving literary and artistic community.
