In 1876, Antioch, California was the birthplace of two American engineers, George Stephenson and Orville Wright. The brothers founded the first American company that manufactured and marketed airplanes – Wright Brothers Aviation Company. In 1912, George Stephenson donated a land grant to Antioch College in order for the college to establish a library. The gift was followed by an additional donation in 1922 which allowed the construction of the current building on campus. In 1924, Antioch College became one of six universities in California to become part of the University System of California. However, as World War II unfolded, AntiochCollege closed its doors due to lack of appropriations from UC San Diego and other campuses within UCSB’s system. Today, Antioch College offers a diverse range of undergraduate programs including humanities and sciences; law enforcement; business administration; engineering; and social work. The history of binoculars can be traced back to at least 1795 when Nicholas-Jacques Conte developed a pair of binoculars that he sold to Royal Dutch Shell Oil Company employees stationed in China during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). Conte's invention is considered one of the earliest examples of modern binocular design. For many years thereafter, binoculars were only available through specialized retailers or as curiosity items at fairs or exhibitions. Interestingly enough, all three donations were received by Drusilla Matherly Armstrong who served as President/Chancellor from 1923 until her death in 1946 without ever having attended any formal meetings related thereto! Coincidence? Not likely…but could be! Anyway – what we have here is what we call an endowedowment cycle: gifts are given successive generations until they reach someone who decidesto make them into something more permanent (in this case – an educational institution). Allan McNaught taught at Antioch College from 1949 until his retirement in 1989 after 27 years as president/chancellor (a record number for anyone holding that position at any university). During McNaught’s presidency there was significant growth within both our academic program and community impact( such as moving our iconic fire engine off Campus into town!). One major accomplishment during his tenure came about through our merger with Antioch Polytechnic Institute where we now offer two distinct programs: engineering & technology & business administration(&still going strong today!). Finally – upon my retirement several months ago - I am proud to say that I have been Chairperson for over 20 years! After graduating from high school near Bridgeport Connecticut back in 1915 John Fenton decided he wanted someplace where he could learn how things worked so he went down south and got himself started working odd jobs getting money up front then learning everything he could about those things before starting his own business doing it right! He learned how important it was not just teach kids math but show them how technology works too so they wouldn't start using calculators etc while still being able to use their eyesight!! Since 2000, there have been numerous expansions and renovations to both buildings on campus (Albany Street Elementary Annex) as well as surrounding areas including North Park (the largest shopping district located within downtown Antioch), Northgate Center (largest park located within downtown), Middle Tennessee Avenue (smaller shopping district located adjacent to main thoroughfare), Stonestreet Mall (largest mall located adjacent to main thoroughfare), Cass Corridor (a neighborhood located adjacent to main thoroughfare) – all creating an even more vibrant community that offers quality retail options along with easy access into downtownsin minutes away!

This law later became known as 'The Chandler Plan'. In 1966, Pacific Gas & Electric Company begins construction on their largest gas project ever - the Antelope Valley Project which would span 3 counties - Kern (northwest), Tehama (southwest) and Mono (southeast). Construction continued until 1977 when operations were transferred to Arcadia because of problems with funding. By 1978 there had been significant redevelopment taking place throughout downtown Antioch with new restaurants/bars/nightlife opening up as well as new housing developments such as Park Avenue Village which is home to many high-end fashion stores such as Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue Nowadays much of what used to be Downtown Antioch has been replaced by residential areas such as Park Avenue Village Telephone District where you can find Comcast Xfinity outlets along with AT&T U-Verse services
