Anderson was founded in 1874 by James H. Anderson, a citizen of Portland, Oregon. The town rapidly grew due to itsRailroad and lumber industries, which remain the primary sources of economic growth today. In 1915, Anderson became the county seat of Kern County; it has remained that way ever since. Anderson is located east-northeast of Fresno on the Kern River near the border of Butte and Bakersfield Counties. The town's ZIP code is 93701. As of the 2010 census, the population was 138,826 people. It is included in Fresno-Madera-Kingsburg CDP which had a population of 187,512 as of 2000 census. The first settler in what is now Anderson was James H. Anderson himself who arrived from Portland on October 5th, 1874 with his family consisting of three children and their father (James). James started a Logging Company in 1875 and within two years had built up a large enough business to start selling land for farmers to build homes on top ofloggin cabins or houses called "Homeship." In 1880 he married Rhoda Gilmore who came from New Orleans Louisiana with her parents and brother John Gilmore who also settled in Kern County in 1865 upon his emancipation from slavery back home after fighting at General Grant's famous Overland Campaign during the American Civil War! In 1915 when Kern County was created it included parts of Tuolumne, Placer and Yuba Counties so most everyone living there then moved into Anderson primarily because it had more space than any other place in Kern County at that time! There were no schools here then so most people educated themselves by reading newspapers or listening to lectures given by dignitaries such as Judge Hiram Sibley or Congressman Fenton Christensen about local history etcetera! Over time many new businesses have come & gone including:dry cleaner/laundry shop;gas station;bank;cafeteria/diner;watch shop;truck stop/publishers office etcetera but one constant has been the amazing support our wonderful community provides for each other thru events like Homecoming weekend every year!
