In 1970, Andersen went bankrupt due to overspending on promotional campaigns for its new downtown shopping mall which had not been built when promised. Many of the company's assets were sold off such as their land holdings and factories while most employees were laid off including some who had worked at the mall since it opened. In 2001, Andersen was purchased by JB Hunt Financial Group for $1 billion dollars making it one of America's largest retail companies with more than 2,000 stores across North America including 805 locations in California alone
