It is located about 40 miles (64 km) south of Bakersfield and 60 miles (96 km) north of Fresno. The first settlers in Anderson were J.D. and Fannie Yates who arrived in 1853 from Illinois. The Yates family built a cabin on the east side of town and raised crops until 1865 when they moved to the west side where they established a sawmill. In 1867, they bought 2,000 acres (800 ha) of land grant that included present-day Anderson and formed the Sprague & Watkins Company which became one of California's largest farmers with over 100 employees operating 10 mills across 7 counties during the 1870s-1920s." Anderson was founded as an agricultural community on April 12, 1861 by John Sprague and Willis Watkins following their arrival from California via wagon train en route to Stockton. They named their settlement after General Ulysses S Grant who had decisively won the US Civil War while serving as US Army Lieutenant General at Fort Donelson in Tennessee near Nashville. At its peak, Anderson had around 100 residents and 20 businesses including 5 banks, several churches, a schoolhouse and two hotels catering to miners visiting for work on neighboring mines during this time period

Anderson, California is a small town located in Humboldt County, California. It was founded in 1868 by Captain James A. Anderson and his family. The present day community of Anderson was first settled in 1872. The name "Anderson" comes from the Mission San Francisco de Asís which was established in 1769 and named for Alcalde Juan Bautista de Atanasio, who also served as governor of New Mexico. Fremont's Battalion No. 9 arrived at Fort Bridger on September 9, 1847 and Camp Carson on October 3rd where they were quartered until December 1st when they marched to Donner Pass to help assemble General William Custer's army that was attacking the Central Pacific Railroad company at Bear Hill. Captain James A. Anderson died on February 10th, 1865 while serving with Company K, 2nd Infantry Regiment Wyoming Volunteers during the American Civil War at the Battle of Appomattox Court House Virginia near Petersburg Virginia after leading his men into battle against Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee despite being outnumbered three to one! He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery with his fellow Union military veterans including Lieutenant Colonel Amos Kendall US Army (Retired) and Major John Danks US Marine Corps ( Retired).
