In 1898, the first handgun sights were patented in Anaheim, California. The patent was filed by N.J. Morton and C.P. Maynard and is still in use today. Anaheim, California was founded on March 14, 1853 by Captain James Irvine and his men as a rancho in what is now Orange County. On February 14, 1959, the city limits were expanded to include Riverside County. The city has since grown to be one of Southern California's most populous and economically diversified cities with a population of over 6 million residents.
In 1869, the first permanent settlers in Anaheim made their home on a small piece of land at what is now known as Rosemead Boulevard. The community quickly grew and by 1887, there were over 100 residents in the area. In 1895, Anaheim became part of the newly formed Orange County, and it soon became one of the most important economic hubs in Southern California. The city hosted several large civil rights demonstrations during the 1960s, including ones against segregation in public transportation and housing. In 1984, Anaheim was renamed to its current name – Anaheim Hills – in honor of then- Mayor Pat O’Malley.
