They discovered several small villages living along routes connecting southern California with Yuma County and Baja California Province (now Mexico). These villages were abandoned soon afterward because they were difficult to protect from raiders who invaded their lands during this time period. In 1869, George canyon married Anna Maria Smith (née Weir) who hailed from eastern Oregon but had emigrated to California with her parents some years earlier. The couple set out for what would become their home country, America, settling near Truckee Meadows where they started a large ranch featuring twelve miles (19 km) of mail road leading into central California as well as five small outposts serving scattered local farming villages adjacent to Mexico Creek Valley on US 395 then through Echo Lake onto Russian Hill Road before arriving at their final outpost just outside present-day American Canyon which they named after themselves – George’s Ranch or “the place where we got our start” (). On October 12, 1850, Bancroft's army destroyed part of Yuma Mesa while constructing Route 66; this event is generally considered to be the beginning of modern civilization in California. In 1861-1862, Union soldiers under General John Custer fought their way through California's Sierra Nevada range into what is now Utah and Nevada before retreating back across the border into Arizona Territory; this event is generally considered responsible for ending traditional Indian hunting practices on those portions of North America that are today located within California’s borders. Between 1860 and 1870 alone, about 120 square miles (291 sq km) of present-day American Canyon were surveyed by Humboldt County Sheriff Gifford Miller pursuant to federal law called "The Law of Lands." This survey resulted in three maps which defined much of what exists within Californian boundaries today: northeast corner of San Bernardino County including Menifee Valley northward along State Route 10 past Big Bear Lake eastward through Oakhurst Hills northward until it intersected Owens Valley; northwest corner including all or part of Menifee Valley southward along State Route 190 westward until it intersected Owens Valley; southeast corner including all or part of Watsonville Village southward along State Route 101 southeast until it intersected Ione Creek east]; eastern side extending from Ione Creek east allthe way downriver past Redding
