Aliso Viejo, California was first settled by the Tongva people in the late 6th century. They founded the town of Alisaluma on what is now the border of Orange County and Riverside County. The Tongva left the area around Alisaluma after they were pushed out of their ancestral homeland by the Chumash people. In 1821, Captain John Broughton surveyed and named Alisaluma for his friend, Lieutenant Colonel David Price of the United States Army. The town grew rapidly during its early years as a result of its natural resources: Sitka spruce, cedar, and Mission orange trees. However, there were also problems with crime and poverty. By 1830, Alisaluma had a population of 350 residents and was being used as a military post by American forces stationed in Southern California. In 1862, when General Ulysses S Grant relieved Abraham Lincoln from office, Alisaluma became part of Riverside County because it was thought that Riverside would be more likely to become an American city given its strategic location between Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay. After World War II ended in 1945, many local businesses closed due to low demand for manufactured goods following the war's end. In 1948, Alisaluma voters passed a resolution declaring themselves an independent city within Riverside County free from any county control or jurisdiction except for matters pertaining to welfare and education; this resolution later became law when Riverside County was created.)
