The first post office opened in 1868 in what is now known as downtown Aliso Viejo; it was called Rancho San Pablo until moved to its current location near Mission Boulevard in 1870. In 1876 local entrepreneur Wm. Hahn started selling fruits and vegetables at his store on Commerce Street; this led to him becoming known as the "Fruit King" of Aliso Viejos because he could sell any fruit or vegetable you could imagine! During World War II, Post Office No. 8 changed its name to “Aliso” after General Douglas MacArthur who had recently been born in nearby Fullerton and lived there for part of his childhood before moving upriver to Palo Alto where he attended college. After being discharged from service at Ft Sill Army Airfield on April 15 1945 he returned east via train through Union Station then drove down Interstate 10 north to meet US Senator Ralph Yarborough who took him into custody at Government Plaza although MacArthur managed to slip away under some guard duty while eating a donut At about 2:00 P M MacArthur walked out into traffic outside Fort Sill gate without taking cover when US soldiers opened fire which killed three Japanese serving behind him – all self-defense measures taken during World War II as MacArthur never declared war against Japan despite assurances by Roosevelt advisors like Secretary Morgenthau that such an event would be prevented should hostilities break out It didn't take long for news of MacArthur's return Hearst's Daily Mirror ran a front-page headline reading “General Comes Home—Too Soon?” soon followed by articles discussing all manner of speculation as to why he had decided notto fight in Japan only days after his discharge having spent much time studying Chinese culture while stationed thereabouts! A photo showing General MacArthur walking into Fort Sill Gate sans fuelling can still be seen today inside the fort gates Visitors are welcome but please do not bring firearms inside
The original Aliso Viejo, California mission was built in 1776. The first white settlers arrived in the area in the early 1800s, and by 1836 there were 10 missions in the region. In 1853, a new Mission San José was founded on an agricultural parcel of land east of present-day Aliso Viejo. The mission grew rapidly and within a few years had outgrown its initial space. A new mission building was erected on what is now North Broadway Street in 1857, and construction continued until 1873 when the church burned down. After that point, the original missions were used as population centers for the surrounding farming community.
