The name Aliso Viejo comes from Rancho Alisalva which was given to Spanish settlers by Governor Manuel Nieto on December 12, 1853. It was later given to James W. Aliso who built a post office at the site in 1857 and another post office at 6th Street and Spring Street in 1858. In 1886, the land comprising what is now Aliso Viejo was annexed by Los Angeles County and it became part of downtown Los Angeles through annexation on January 15, 1913. The first settlement in what is now Aliso Viejo occurred around 1800 when Spanish soldiers were sent out to try to find a new location for missions in Southern California because of problems with Native American tribes living near Mission San Gabriel Arcángel. One group led by José Castro established a rancho on the present-day corner of Spring Street and 6th Avenue. They named their holdings Rancho de las Aguas (meaning "Ranch of the Waters"). In 1853, Mexican citizens Francisco Pacheco and José Antonio Serrano purchased Rancho de las Aguas from Castro for $5200USD including livestock, tools, crops, adobe walls and other materials used for irrigation systems within Mexico City; this allowed them to start farther downriver from Mission San Gabriel Arcángel than any previous European settlers had done for fear that they would be discovered by Mexican authorities if they stayed too long upstream. The Pachecos lived at Rancho Alisalva until after Mexico's independence from Spain in1821; then they turned over ownership of their property to José Antonio Serrano who operated it as an Adobe Walls farm until his death in 1846.
