A post office called Rancho Cucamonga was established in 1859 under the name Oficina de Bahia del Oro (Office of Harbor). When US Commodore John Doolittle visited California during his 1860 visit he ordered all American ships be returned home without landing any passengers so he could explore this new territory instead of stopping at Vera Cruz or Mexico City He named his new harbor after himself - San Diego Bay - but it didn't take long for locals to realize they'd be better off calling their new town Aliso Viejo because that's where all the grapes were grown!
