Aliso Viejo is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 182,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area and is the second most populous city in Southern California afterLos Angeles. As of 2019, Aliso Viejo had an estimated population of 383,815 people. The area now known as Aliso Viejo was first inhabited by Mono Indians and Ohlone Native Americans before being explored by Europeans in 1769 and claimed for Spain by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo. In 1821, Alisalvo became part of Mexico City following its independence from Spain. The arrival of American settlers in 1851 changed all that with James Winton claiming land on the east side of town for himself and his family. Winton built his Rancho San Antonio de la Paloma near present-day Interstate 5/US 101 interchange to provide easy access to what he called "the best water resources in any part of California." In 1872, Winton sold some land to Jens Pohlmeyer who then subdivided it into parcels and founded the City of Aliso Viejo on April 15,. Pohlmeyer named it after him since he owned all or parts of the original acreage given to him. By 1886 when incorporation took place under charter from Santa Ana County officials, there were only 350 residents living within the limits prescribed by law including 100 Anglo-Americans and 150 Mexican-born citizens majority white Sinagoga men led by José Guerra. A few years later Anglo entrepreneurs arrived looking for a cotton gin operation they could own while Mexicans looked out for their interests because they felt they were not being given a fair shake as merchants or civic leaders within town limits; this issue would come up again during prohibition era when business owners could get government liquor licenses but couldn't operate without breaking state law.). During Prohibition many businesses closed including those run by Hispanic businessmen which contributed to increased tension between Anglo and Mexican residents culminating with violence on November 12th 1920 when about 50 Anglo-Mexican residents led by José Guerra raided Spanish Town grocery store operated by Don Francisco Dominguez whereupon 200+ men came out guns drawn against 30+ Mexicans who had gathered inside in order to buy necessities such as food
