Alhambra Shooting Target Holder History began in the early 1920s when a man by the name of John L. Hilty established a shooting range and sporting goods store in what is now known as Alhambra. In 1922, Mr. Hilty purchased a small parcel of land located near City Hall in Alhambra and built his first target stand on it. The original target stand still stands today, complete with all of its original equipment including the three-foot long posts and 10-gallon drum used to hold water for targets. Over time,Mr. Hilty refined his techniques and improved his target stand so that it became one of the most popular firearms ranges in Southern California. In 1934, Mr. Hilty donated $5,000 towards the construction of a new training academy which would become Alhambra Shooting Academy & Range Incorporated (ASAR). ASAR was dedicated to providing instruction to individuals who wanted to improve their shooting skills and learn about shotguns, handguns, riflery and airsoft weaponry. ASAR has been owned and operated by our current owners since 1978!
Alhambra is a city in the southern part of Los Angeles County, California. It is located on the eastern border of Los Angeles and its metropolitan area, including Downtown LA, has a population of 3 million people. The name comes from the ruins of an ancient palace called La Alhambra which was once one of the largest and most ornate palaces in Europe. The city proper was founded by Mexican colonists in 1821 as Rancho San Vicente de las Americas; it became a U.S. territory after Californios gained full statehood in 1850. In 1907, Alhambra became one of Home Rule City's charter cities under the supervision of the County Board of Supervisors. The first mayor was Hiram Johnson (1907-10). In 1915, Alhambra annexed adjacent Diamond Valley to form a new city limits; this annexation also included portions of West Hollywood and North Hollywood. On January 1, 2020, Home Rule City voters passed Measure S1 which repealed all local taxes within 120 miles (193 km) radius of downtown LA with exceptions for property tax sales and services rendered to residents within that radius by businesses engaged in activities that are constitutionally protected by state law such as education or health care services.
