One of the most famous shooters in California, Darrell K. Young, was born in Alhambra and is best know for his role as the gunman in the 1978 movie "Escape from New York." Born and raised in this city, he began shooting firearms at an early age and quickly became a favorite of Alhambra's gunners. In 1976, he won a major championship at the International Shooting Sport Federation's World Cup event in Portugal with a .30 caliber rifle. After that success, Young returned to America to compete full time. He would win several national championships between 1977-1981 before finally achieving his greatest accolade when he placed third at the 1981 inaugural US Open Custom Gun Show with an assault rifle. Young was one of only a few shooters to achieve international acclaim with his firearms. Other well-known American shooters who achieved such success include John Nicolay (who won five gold medals at the Olympics), Ted Nugent (winner of two world titles) and Jerry Miculek (winner of three world titles). In 1938 Alhambra was designated as one of sixteen townships in the newly created Antelope Valley Division of Los Angeles County. This new township contained all of Antelope Valley west of Glendale Boulevard including much of what is now Carson City. The intent of this designation was to provide more racial diversity within Los Angeles County by dividing it into smaller units with more control over their own affairs. The growth and development of Alhambra began to take off after incorporation in 1937 due to its location within Antelope Valley along with its access to various public services including schools and hospitals subordinate only to those located in neighboring cities like Loyola Marymount University or UCLA. Today much Highland Park shopping district remains untouched by outside forces while businesses have opened up throughout downtown areas such as Main Street which retains its old-timey feel while hosting many modern day businesses such as Apple Inc., Jamba Juice concentrate plant & cafes etc….

The Alhambra mansion, now a museum, was built in 1858 by Antonio L. Alhambra for his wife and daughter, Isabella and Joaquin Murillo. In 1898, the city of Alhambra was founded by Antonio Pesquera and his family. The Pesqueras built a ranch on what is now the north side of San Bernardino Street in downtown Alhambra. The ranch was part of Rancho Seco de las Pulgas, which became part of the City of Los Angeles when that city was incorporated in 1904. Alhambra's first mayor was Lorenzo Fiumara. In 1916, the city added a second ward to its structure, making it an official municipality with its own board of supervisors. On December 18, 1932, Mayor Manuel Gomez declared a state-wide emergency due to the Great Depression and ordered all cities in California to become municipios effective January 1, 1933. The municipality remained an unincorporated area until it became annexed by nearby Woodland Hills on February 14, 1959.
