Alhambra, California is home to one of the world's first optical accessory stores, The Optical Emporium. It was founded in 1884 by Jennie and Julius Schwartz. In 1912, Harry Kessler opened his own store in nearby Pasadena. By the end of the 1920s, all three stores were combined into one location at 9th and I Streets in Alhambra. In 1939, The Optical Emporium became part of J.C. Penney Corporation and changed its name to JCPenney Optical Department. In 1984, JCPenney merged with Sears Holdings Corporation and the optical department became Sears Electronics Department; however, it continued to operate as a separate business until 2007 when it merged with Craftsman Tools Company to form Craftsman Tools & Hardware Company Inc.; however, this company ceased operations in 2013 due to stronger competition from ShopRite Supermarkets Inc..
Alhambra is a city located in the Riverside County, California Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of 2010, the population was 1,642. It is part of the San Bernardino-Sunnyvale-Arden-Plainfield CDP. The city was founded in 1875 by Spanish settlers as Rancho El Alhambra on land that now includes most of downtown and much of Midtown Alhambra. The name means "thealambras" (a type of grape) in Spanish and it refers to the high mountain range that makes up much of the city's eastern border. The original business district included many large stores and hotels near Mission Park; today, only a few blocks east of State Street remain mostly commercial properties. In 1915, when company founder Antonio Paloura died, his wife Félixia donated land for a new university campus adjacent to her rancho; Alumni from Paloura's old company were among those who helped build Mount Sinai Hospital at Claremont Avenue and Campus Drive in 1927. Today, Mount Sinai is one of Southern California's largest medical institutions with over 100 campuses across 26 states and Canada. During World War II, Alhambra played an important role as the headquarters for military intelligence operations within the United States Strategic Air Command (USAAF). In 2007, US News & World Report ranked Alhambra #2 among America's 35 Most livable cities based on rankings compiled from 24 factors including quality of life, public services and economic stability.

Alhambra, California is a city in northern Orange County, California, United States. The population was 902 at the 2010 census. It is located in the San Gabriel Valley and is adjacent to Los Angeles. Alhambra was founded in 1881 by banker George C. Herndon as a sale of land for $10 an acre to Charles Wertheimer and others. In 1892, it became a town when its two namesake streets were connected by one street name only. The city's first Mayor was James Purdy with his term from 1895 until 1897; he also served as Alhambra's City Councilman from 1891-1893 and 1899-1901. Mrs. Mary Ayer (bald woman) served on the first City Council from 1907 to 1912 after being elected at-large as part of the new Town Charter enacted that year following passage of state Proposition 8 (formerly known as the "Equality amendment"); she served until her death in 1916 then again from 1928-1932 before returning to office in 1936; Hiram Jaffe was mayor during this time frame 1959-1966 with three terms total while Harry Bendix held office during 1967-1971; Democrat Don Perrone took office 1971-1975; Republican Tom Kappes took office 1975-1981; Democratic Rudy Giuliani became Mayor 1981–1989; and current Mayor Ed Lee has been since 1989–2001
The Alhambra Palace, also known as the Alcazar Palace and the Royal Palace of Casa de las Flores, was built by King Philip II of Spain in the 17th century. The palace is located in downtown Los Angeles, California and is one of the oldest surviving examples of a grandiose complex of white-frame buildings in North America. It was originally designed as a royal residence for his wife and daughters, but was expanded over time to become an elaborate national monument. Today it houses the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and is used as a hotel.
