Englishman John Hawkins reached this area early in 1779 during his exploration of coastal Southern California and thought he found an Indian village here but no evidence exists to support this claim. In 1784, Gaspar de Portolà visited Alhambra for about a week and recorded some interesting information about its architecture including that all dwellings were built with arches and piers into which water was poured to create irrigation systems. In 1821 Antonio Banderas made an abortive attempt to build a misionera station near present day downtown LA when he explored downrange from Pasadena across San Gabriel Valley; he reported finding rich mineral deposits along his route but no significant human settlements were observed or noted during his journey. A few weeks later José Joaquin Cisneros discovered oil wells around El Segundo east of Downtown LA while driving south on I-5 on July 24th 1825 In 1827 Mexican Surveyor General Manuel Micheltorena completed surveys for Rancho La Brea which included parts of today's Alhambra neighborhoods including Pershing Square/Hollywood Park, Morongo Park and Westgate shopping center now bounded by Vine Street, Gadsden Avenue and Winchester Street inside City limits now part of East Los Angeles Neighborhoods Council boundaries . After Micheltorena's survey & purchase from Jesús García un total area within city limits lay between Willowbrook Avenue & Hollywood Boulevard west side (now Christopher Street) & east side (now Cedros Avenue) & north side (now Lankford Avenue) [of present day Inwood] (& what is now Riverside Drive) - land lying now outside City Limits then known as Rancho La Brea - All this area became part of Covina Municipality thru annexation under Act No 796 approved February 25th 1860 by Governor Pico doble Alhambra's name may have originated with another mission founded nearby: Nuestra Señora del Carmen Mission which operated from 1795 until 1840 adjacent to present day Cathedral School campus southwest corner Masonic Road/Alameda Highway today part of Sepulveda Neighborhoods Council boundaries . And finally "al-hama" meaning "beautiful place" according to Arab traders who Visitng North America during Ottoman times . So these are only some possible origins for how Alhambra got its name! Today two main thoroughfares run through town: One starts at Civic Center Blvd./Vine St., runs northwest through Central Ave./Pershing square before reaching Highland Ave./Hollywood Blvd., where it turns northeast towards Power Rd./Covina Boulevard before turning back southwest again near Academy Road/Los Angeles Airport boundary; the other begins near United States Steelhead Amphitheater/Rancho Palmas Rd., runs southeast through Playfair square before intersecting Wilshire Blvd./Pasadena Ave.; it then turns northwest and enters University Heights via Sherman Way just east of Staples Center property line
Alhambra is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 224,394 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area and is the second-largest city in Orange County after Garden Grove. Alhambra was founded on October 14, 1874 by John Waddell and his wife Augusta Chapman as a small farming community called "Alameda". The name may be derived from an old Spanish word meaning "the place where trees grow". On February 14, 1912 Alhambra citizens voted to reincorporate as a city. In 1932, the City of Hollywood annexed Alhambra to its territory. In 1959, Hollywood annexes portions of neighboring Hawthorne Heights and Northridge for development into their own city limits. In 1972, Santa Ana annexes parts of Alhambra for development into their own city limits; this annexation created what is now known as Monterrey Park within the boundaries of Alhambra. Finally in 1984 distressed homeowners in Santana Row applied to sell their homes back to the City of Los Angeles but were refused because they did not meet all requirements set forth by then-City Manager Gil García (later Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa). On May 7, 1990 voters passed Measure M which repealed most formerlatino exclusions that had been put into effect with Measure J (1988), which prohibited new subdivisions or sales outside bounded areas defined by zip code 90007 and 90002 specifically designated for those groups since 1978 when these exclusions became effective retroactive to April 1st of that year inclusive. This measure allowed any homeowner within those boundaries who desired it— notwithstanding any prior subdivision ownership restrictions placed upon them by earlier city ordinances—to purchase land contiguous with their existing home without having first obtained a deed from either party theretofore owning such land; and finally repealed all originallatino exclusionary zoning laws and regulations dating back to 1978 save for two exceptions: one relating to minimum lot size requirements for subdivision approval; and one governing conditional use permits being granted subject only to certain restrictions as presently determined pursuant to current Planning Code §11362(a) regarding firetrucks used on private property adjacent or contiguous thereto during emergency response operations only if used “in conjunction with” preapproved public safety responses also taking place on said property at least 50 feet away from any residentially occupied structure or building connected therewith (i.e., fire department training exercises). After passage ofMeasure M many residents wanted more say about how their neighborhoods were developed so they formed Neighborhood Boards which limited themselves instead largelyto issues surrounding street maintenance such as graffiti removal/repainting etc...and policy making towards future growth decisions however some neighborhood boards have become more active roleplayers representationwithin municipal government
