Alhambra, California is a small city in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles County, California. In 1824 Mexican land grantee José Canseco settled a group of Mexicans at Rancho La Brea on present-day Ventura Boulevard between Academy Road and Laurel Canyon Boulevard. Canseco named his rancho after Alcántara Palace in Madrid, Spain where he had been born in 1768. Canseco's heirs sold their holdings in Alhambra during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). On July 14, 1875, while under military occupation of Mexico City by American forces under General Zachary Taylor, Californian soldiers burned down Alcántara Palace and many other buildings including Mission Santa Clara de Asís with artillery assistance from Lieutenant Colonel John Cushing’s 1st U.S.-Mexican Battalion commanded by Captain James Jarrell; subsequent investigations revealed that no one was hurt or killed in this event other than Cushing himself (). The loss of Alcántara caused great bitterness among some residents of Los Angeles over what they saw as Yankee aggression against Mexico (). In 1888 real estate developer Gilchrist Parsons purchased part of Alcántara's remaining estate for $2 million dollars making it one of the largest single purchases ever made in Los Angeles County history (). Parsons renamed his new development Alhambra Park after his old home town of Hamden Township, Connecticut (). The area now comprising Alhambra Village contains much Of Pasadena's early 20th century architecture including several churches dating back to 1870 (El Cathedral de la Patria Methodist Episcopal Church), three schools (Parsons School Annexes #1 through #3; Los Altos School District Elementary School #1; Highland Senior High School), plus two recent additions: One a luxury high-rise tower called "The Peninsula" completed in 2000 atop a parcel formerly occupied by Leland Stanford Junior Coliseum—the second being Pershing Square Plaza complete within Park Genschwind's original 1915 corner lot overlooking Hollywood Hills) . The current mayor is Antonio Villaraigosa

However, portions of the old town remain intact—including several churches and museums dating back to colonial times.
