It is the most populous city in Riverside County and one of the few cities in Northern California with a population over 100,000. The name “Alhambra” means “the palace” in Spanish. The first permanent settler arrived in 1849, although there were intermittent visits by Mexicans and other immigrants for years before that. The area now known as Alhambra was part of two Mexican ranchos which were ceded to America on February 24, 1848 by Mexico City Governor José Joaquín Murría y de la Torre. It took until September 15, 1853 for Alhambra to be incorporated as a town platted under authority of President James K. Polk from favorable recommendations from Lieutenant Colonel Obed Fenimore Cooper of the US Army Corps of Engineers – himself an early Californian landowner and civic leader – after surveys had been made by him and his associates George Wirtz and George Stephenson.* The town quickly grew due to its location near major highways (I-10 through downtown) and its easy access to goods and services available outside the small rural community then located around it: citrus groves, dairy farms, mining operations (from silver found at Anza Pass), military installations (including Fort Tejon) and important agricultural areas such as Lake Arrowhead*. In 1870–71*, when Angeles National Forest was created within Riverside County*, Alhambra became an important stop on U.S.-sponsored surveyors working out how best to manage this virgin forest*; it remains one of the few places where such activity took place today (* *Unauthorized survey work continued into 1918). During World War II*, Alhamba served as a training ground for various American forces; some 3200 Japanese troops were brought here during 1944–45* (* *Some sources claim up to 7000 Japanese troops may have been brought here between 1943-1945). Families who moved into newly developed neighborhoods adjacent to downtown during that time period often called their new home "Calafia", or "the hacienda" because much of what they acquired came from confiscated Mexican resources††† *. As nearby north county communities grew more established – Dublin began construction on what would become Sierra Vista in 1926; Fountain Valley started development along I-5 southwbkdy/PCH in 1951 – so did retail corridors leading away from downtown culminating atowntown's east edge with State Street connections thereto *. redevelopment has accelerated markedly since 2000* [* *See Downtown Development District].
