Albany is a city located in Kern County, California, on the east side of the San Joaquin Valley. The population was 21,812 at the 2010 census. In 1810 Francisco Juriros discovered gold near present-day Yosemite National Park while exploring southcentral California under José Gabriel Govierno y Costilla's command as colonel general of Mexican soldiers occupying that area following Mexico's independence from Spain. In 1851 John Sutter established Sutter's Fort at what is now downtown Albany after striking oil shale near Rosaldi Reservoir in Kern County and wagon train travel across central California proved successful; this led to increased settlement throughout what would become Kern County and beyond by Anglo miners over the next several decades until all nonnative land had been claimed or converted to public use by 1906. Withdrawal from statehood caused economic decline in nearby Visalia during the late 19th century but progressed slowly enough so that agriculture could be replaced first with citrus fruit production followed by prospection and real estate development beginning around 1920 when Interstate 5 was completed linking northern Fresno with Los Angeles via Stockton/Rancho Cordova before finally reaching Albany during its construction phaseifying much rural life within easy commuting distance for both cities already well connected culturally through horseback riding, carriage driving and stagecoach travel between them.. Albany, California is a city in the Central Valley of California. The population was 57,828 at the 2010 census. The name Albany comes from Spanish and means "the capital." In 1853, the Mexican government granted land to David Thompson and named it Rancho San Francisco after Commodore John C. Fremont's expedition that discovered the route overland to California. This grant was increased in 1859 when Governor Manuel Micheltorena designated it as part of Alta California for use by American settlers. On October 20, 1850, General Mariano Escobar purchased 3,500 acres (1 km2) of this land from José Joaquín Mejía for $10 per acre ($2/km²). In 1851 many men and boys started working on a new irrigation project under J.P. Morgan which later became known as the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Water Project. They called their company Mid-Valley Irrigation Company because they were irrigating what would become parts of Sacramento County and Kern County. George Hearst bought some shares in this company in 1855 and soon he had control over much of central Valley agriculture including most of what would become Albany. The first post office opened in Albany on December 1, 1850; it was renamed Crescent City on May 6th of 1861 due to its location at the confluence of two rivers: Sacramento Creek and Yuba River. In 1865, Crescent City became an incorporated town with a population of around 100 people led by Hennepin County Commissioner Gouverneur Morris who also served as mayor from 1870-1872 After years during which no major development occurred within town limits until World War II when many local businesses turned into military plants or other important institutions such as Eastman Kodak Company (1946-1949), small business owners returned to Crescent City after 1945 but few large companies returned until recent times when there are numerous high technology firms located within easy walkable streets near downtown .
