Albany, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 381 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino metropolitan area. Albany was founded in 1887 by John W. Dixon and named after Albany, New York City. In 1915, it became an incorporated municipality. The city is located on the banks of the River Kern River and has a population of about 362 as of 2019. The name "Albany" comes from French for "an old town." John Dixon had been born in Albany, New York to parents who arrived there from Ireland in 1795. He started farming and trading with Native Americans before moving to southern California to start a rancho in 1847. In 1865 he sold his rancho and moved to what is now Albany, then opened up land for settlement with cattle drives and stores becoming one of the first businesses in the area. In 1888 Dixon donated 160 acres (64 ha) north of downtown to become what would be known as Orchard Park while still living in Canada; this land would eventually be annexed by Albany when it formed part of San Bernardino County during 1920s realignment process following statehood of California

On December 12th 1860, during the American Civil War, Union General John Crayton's brigade under Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Jenson burned down a sawmill owned by William Bickerton on Tenth Street near present day First Avenue. This event helped spur development in the area around Albany due to increased competition for mill space and new transportation routes opened up after war ended. In 1865–1867 he surveyed what became block number one on Third Avenue and Broadway which later became home to many small businesses including Blacksmiths Shop & Supply Store (now Macy's), banks (JPMorgan Chase Bank 1870-1974; First National Bank 1893-1971), shoe store (later Sears), bakery (Empire Bakery Company 1907-1993), meat market (later Precious Metals grocery store 1901-1982) as well as numerous other small businesses that have since been lost or gone out of business due to suburbanization or other trends over time. The first post office was established in Albany on May 4th 1868 when Wm Hays opened a post office at Seventh and Townsend Streets. The first telephone service arrived in Albany on October 15th 1870 using Olden trunk lines from Oakland through Berkeley Valley via North Concord Road until it was replaced by Northern Pacific Railroad service on November 7th 1971 using modern infrastructure today known as I‑5 freeway access eastbound lanes between Richmond and San Pablo Roads. In 1888 Empire Bakery moved its business operations from downtown Albany to new premises at 501 Fourth Ave., just south of current day Fifth Avenue BART Station which remains their original location today despite multiple moves throughout their history including two times being located inside Sacramento Kings Arena! On September 9th 1951 Voters approved Measure #2 which led to annexation of much portions of Contra Costa County including parts formerly within town limits such as Elk Grove Village and Hercules Albany experienced rapid growth following incorporation into city limits effective January 1st 1954 with an then total population increase reaching 100,876 residents within 10 years! By 1970 Albanys population exceed 150K without annexing any territory making it one of the fastest growing cities ever!!

The first European to visit what is now Albany was Captain Francis Drake on his circumnavigation of the world in 1579. The town was founded by Nicolas-Jacques Conte on October 25, 1804 as part of Rancho Sacramento de la Parilla grant from Governor Manuel Nieto to Antonio López de Santa Anna. Albany grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its strategic location at the junction of four major wagon roads linking Stockton with Sacramento and other large cities across Northern California. The arrival of railroads helped spur economic development and led to increased population growth throughout much of the early 21st century; however, recent years have seen a slowdown in growth as suburbanization takes hold in many areas around Albany. The first permanent white settlers arrived in what is now Albany dates back to 1824 when250 men, women and children under the leadership of Captain John Cranch formed a party seeking passage on an American brigantine called "Santa Clara" headed for Oregon via Folsom Bay. On July 14, 1825 they reached Angel Island near present-day Redding before being turned back by Coast Guard forces en route due to adverse weather conditions encountered off Cape Mendocino; this event became known as the "Drake Incident".
